"I want to be a queen," you say. "Just like Mama."
Brindleclaw's face lights up, her tail perking straight up. "Oh, what a dear little kit. Brindleclaw will be fearsome grandmother, make kits strong!"
Brumestar's face darkens. "It's not that easy. If WillowClan was a tree, queens would be a bark. They shield the clan's most vulnerable members, and must help them grow strong enough to stand on their own four paws. As queen, you would help raise the future of our clan. First you would need some warrior training, because a queen must always be able to defend their kits. You would live two lives, one inside the clan, one in the outside world. If you don't like one, you could not care for another litter or become a permanent queen."
"That sounds nice," you say. The path of the queen seems like the only one that actually gives you freedom to make choices later in life.
"Not so fast," warns Brumestar, her eyes narrowing. "You'd have to be with your kits every waking moment from birth until apprenticeship. They will rely on you completely to feed, clean, and care for them, especially in the first three moons of their life. If they die, as many kits do, you may never recover from their deaths. You must show them nothing but love and care no matter how aggravating they get."
"Wrong, Brumestar," says Brindleclaw gravely. "Mother could never grow to hate kit, no matter how irritating." She gestures her tail at you playfully. "Take zis one, for instance." You roll your eyes.
Brumestar stares into the distance as if seeing something that no one else can see, the wind blowing through her fur. After a few moments, she takes a deep breath and looks back at you. "The choice is yours," she says simply. "We will proceed in your apprentice ceremony as if you had chosen the path of the warrior. During that time, you'll have an opportunity to find a mate. If you have kits, the path of the queen will become open to you." You frown, pouring over the intense responsibilities but also great pleasures life as a queen might provide. Finally, you look up at Brumestar, ready to provide your answer.
1.Brumestar's issues won't keep you from your dream of kits and a gorgeous mate. You'll become a warrior for now, but you know what you really want. Go to Page 42.
2.Maybe a warrior is a better choice. Carrying for kits is a lot of work, and staying tied down to one place for six moons sounds miserable. Go to Page 38.
3.You don't think life outside of the safety of camp is worth the chance at love. The path of the medicine cat would put you above all the drama of love. Go to Page 39.
4.Why is Brumestar being so strange and angsty? No more choices, why can't you just stay with mama and be a kit forever? Go to Page 41.
