"I'm sure, Brumestar," you say as confidently as you can. "I've got what it takes to be a warrior."

Brumestar nods. "Very good. Meet the other kits by the Withered Trunk. I will announce a clan meeting soon, and the next phase of your life will begin." A shudder passes through your body, although you can't tell if it's from excitement or nervousness.

Brindleclaw brushes the top of your head with one of her front paws. "You vill become strong varrior cat like Mama. Still, Brindleclaw vill miss you, little kit. Brindleclaw vill be zere every moment if you need anything. Anything at all."

You gently remove yourself from her touch, feeling the sweat on her paw pads. "Thanks Mama," you purr, brushing your head against her pelt. You look up at Brindleclaw, her pelt looking a little more white than you remember. "Mama, can you tell me more about Dad?"

A dark look came into Brindleclaw's and she pads a few paces away, looking into the horizon. "Maybe other time. Zis is your moment, little kit. Don't waste your breath on him."

You frown, and open your mouth to say more, but Ravenkit cuts you off. "Come on!" she hisses. "The Gathering's just about to start! Move over here, you sleepyslug!"

Reluctantly, you obey as you notice the rest of the kits clustered around the Withered Trunk at the center of camp. Violetkit and Sparrowkit seem too engrossed in their own worries to take notice of you, but Ravenkit gives you a smug smile. "I bet you'll never guess who my mentor is going to be," she brags.

"How about Weaselheart?" you suggest, gesturing at the smallest warrior in the clan. He sat next to Eaglepaw, his fur matted, and his tail thin and mangy. Eaglepaw sits sullenly beside him, already taller and broader than the older tom.

Ravenkit waves her paw dismissively. "Don't be mousebrained, he's already Eaglepaw's mentor," she scoffs. Her smile widens as Brumestar climbs the Withered Trunk. "You'll see."

Before you can say anything else, you hear Brumestar clearing her throat. "All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath the Withered Trunk for a clan meeting." Cats who were not already waiting slip out of every den at the leader's words. Cherrybloom, the medicine cat,  moves to sit near Brumestar and glances at you, her soft golden eyes filled with compassion. Deputy Darkmask slinks up to sit beside Cherrybloom on the lower part of the Withered Trunk. His piercing green eyes narrow as he surveys the apprentices, lingering particularly on Ravenkit and you.

"We are here to welcome four new kits as apprentices of WillowClan," announces Brumestar. "Violetkit, Sparrowkit, Ravenkit, and Y/Nkit have all reached the age of six moons when their apprenticeship must begin. Sparrowkit, step forward."

As Sparrowkit steps forward, a butterfly lands on a nearby sunflower. Your eyes flick back between Brumestar and the butterfly. The other ceremonies could take a while...

1. You can't afford to get distracted. You're going to be a warrior now, and besides, you don't want to miss all your friends' ceremonies, do you? Go to Page 47.

2.Apprentice ceremonies are soooo boring. Until the important stuff starts and Brumestar calls your name, you can afford to goof off a little. Go to Page 48.
