What They Don't See

Chapter 8 - Let them guess

It was late.

Very late.

But Kate couldn't find within her the will to sleep.

She lay staring up at her bedroom ceiling, replaying the events of the day over and over again in her mind. She tried to tell herself she was analyzing, looking for mistakes like she always did, but this time, she could admit to herself that was a lie. Even her sub-conscience was quiet for once.

The memory of the kisses they had shared today replayed over and over, reminding her of that electric feeling, the way it held onto her so completely. The kisses had all been meant to be a show for the reporter that had been standing outside her living room window, but regardless, they had felt so real. The emotion behind each one was not fake. No one could lie that well. 

Another memory that was replaying in her mind was the moment he found out that she had been threatened. That raw anger she could see in his body and the fierce look in his beautiful blue eyes seemed like a declaration. Maybe even a question. 'Who the fuck do I need to kill?' 

It was a look she had seen exchanged a few times in her life. The loyalty and devotion in that look was rare but not uncommon in her life. Besides her father and Marcos, who was like a second dad to her, she had never seen that look directed at her. The look that declared that this person would kill hundreds just to see her smile.

Why did he give her that look? Why? She had tried so hard to push him away, to keep him at arm's length, and yet, despite how difficult she had been, that look was there on his face. 

But Logan was different. She was loyal despite everything she had been through, but Logan, was loyal and loving because he was so pure. The world had not damaged him like it had her. He still had the good heart he was born with. And she would not allow that beautiful heart to be tainted by the darkness of her world. She couldn't let herself drag him into her world. He was too good, and he deserved better than this life she had made for herself. 

Yet as Kate sat up and turned on the TV, she couldn't help but wonder if it was already too late to keep him out of it. 

"Mystery solved. Last week our untouchable star Logan Shawn was proved touchable when he was spotted kissing a mystery girl at one of Manhatten's most popular clubs. Today, we can now confirm that the identity of this mystery girl has been discovered, thanks to some clever little detective work. Earlier today, we were informed that Logan was seen visiting her this afternoon. The news came with some adorable pictures of the two cuddled up together on a loveseat in her apartment. After doing some research, we can now confirm that she is Kate Delaquor, the sole heir to her father's multi-million dollar company in France. What do you think, John?"

"Well, they do look really cute together I'll tell you that much. But I gotta say if we had known French girls were his thing we would have tried that years ago!" There was a round of laughter from the two E! News presenters at this joke.

"Well, now the multi-million dollar question remains. Is she his girlfriend? Are they official? What do you guys think?"

As the segment turned into a debate about how long she and Logan have been dating based on the way they had been cuddling, Kate turned to her phone that sat vibrating almost consistently on her nightstand as texts began to flood in. 

Your dating Logan Shawn??? Wtf?!

Girl! Why didn't you tell me that you're dating Logan Shawn?

You're an heiress?? Since when?

Kate stopped reading after the thirteenth text popped up on her notification bar, and groaned in frustration as the calls began to come in as well.
