Kate let out a quick breath, her eyes trained on the adjoining door. By now Tristin probably knew she was here. He would also know that she was aware of his presence in the next room. He wasn't stupid.
The question was, how would he play this?
Kate soon had her answer when she heard his voice.
"Kate! What a delightful surprise to find you here! I expected to find you at your little boy toy's place, can't say I'm complaining. But do tell, whatever made you run over here? Trouble in paradise?"
Kate rolled her eyes.
"Tristin. As predictable as ever. How've you been? I heard you tried to kill me in New York. Do tell me though, of all the possible weapons you could have chosen, why a car?" she yelled back.
"I was actually aiming for that little boy-toy of yours with that one. Figured I'd take a stab at that little heart of yours again and see if it would bleed. Unfortunately, your little man servant just had to fuck it up and take the hit. My condolences by the way," he replied with a dark chuckle. Kate held her gun a little tighter at the jab at Luc.
"Couldn't even get a simple accident right huh? No wonder Papa was so excited to have me take over instead of you. Lord knows how bad you would have fucked that one up."
Kate knew she had hit a nerve. The muffled growl only confirmed it.
Outside, she could hear shots being fired. Her eyes widened when she realized what that meant. Tristan must have realized the same thing; with a dark chuckle he said,
"Looks like lover boy is coming to your rescue. Maybe I should go meet him hm?"
Now it was Kate's turn to growl, but she muffled it with her hand.
"I wouldn't do that Blaise. We're not done here. You haven't even tried to kill me once today," Kate responded, straining to keep her voice light.
"No, but killing another love of yours seems more fun. I'll be back in a bit," Tristin announced before walking out of the other room. Kate swallowed the memories that came flooding into her head at his words and quickly got to action.
Wordlessly, Jac got into position to cover her, and Mason continued to watch the adjoining door. Kate rushed to the door as Jac fired at the men on either side of the door.
With one shot at either man's head, Kate rushed through the doorway and run down the hallway after Tristan.
At that moment all she saw was red.
All sense of reason and logic was gone.
Pure instinct took over.
As he went around a corner, Kate caught up and tackled him to the ground.
Tristan had underestimated her. The force of her body was so sudden that it sent his gun skidding down the hallway ahead of them.
"Motivated are we?" Tristin mumbled with a groan as he slowly stood up.
"If I'd known that boy-toy was such a motivator I'd have threatened his life a lot sooner. Maybe I could have gotten you to rob a few banks on my behalf," he added with a chuckle.
Kate was already on her feet, fists at the ready.
She wasted no time, throwing the first punch before he was even standing. The shot landed right on his jugular, and Tristin took a step back, gasping for air.
But Kate followed, landing a kick to his left kidney while he was distracted.
Before she could get any more hits in, Tristin growled and retaliated. Punch after punch rained down on Kate, all coming at lightning speed. Kate blocked a right hook, only for his left fist to hit her sternum suddenly.
This was Tristin's specialty.
After taking nearly a dozen hits to various parts of her body, Kate growled in frustration and did something unexpected.
Dropping low to the ground just as Tristin was throwing another right hook, Kate swept his legs with one sweep kick, knocking him down to the ground with a groan. Taking his surprise as another opportunity, Kate pinned his arms to his body with her knees and put the weight of her body directly onto his lower abdomen. Pushing her forearm under his chin, she calmly watched him choke.
"You know, the way you spend so much time studying every detail of my life is sad. You should really consider getting yourself a hobby or something. Because this is getting old. Just like you," she told him with a click of her tongue.
There was some commotion behind her, as guests rushed passed the hallway, and paused to gawk at the two people on the ground. Briefly glancing behind her, Kate lost her focus. It was for only a second, but that was all Tristin needed.
Thrusting his left hip up, Kate was tossed to the side, hitting the hallway wall, before landing on the ground beside him. Suddenly, their positions were reversed. Tristin chuckled down at her from his new position on Kate's abdomen.
"Honestly Kate, that was sad, even from you," he told her, his hands on either side of her head.
"I do wonder, how will you save your little boy-toy now? What was his name again? Jordan? Oh, wait no, that was the last one I killed. You remember him right? The big American who was studying at Paris business school with you? Oh, who am I kidding, of course, you remember Jordan. He was like the love of your life. Well, up until he sold you out at the last second hoping it would save his life." Tristin burst out laughing when he saw the look of pure rage on Kate's face.
Kate was fighting every urge that wanted her to cry at that moment. All the memories, both good and bad, came flooding into the forefront of her mind. The last one was the look on Jordan's face when he realized what he had done; when he stared at her with regret as the gun was fired. Kate closed her eyes as that memory resurfaced. Above her, Tristin chuckled again.
"Sorry about that by the way. Anyway, I think it's time for history to repeat itself. Don't you agree?" Suddenly, a fist came straight for Kate's head. As her world went dark, Tristin watched her eyes roll back, before getting up to go in search of his gun, and then, Logan.
