Chapter 14 - The incident

It had been two months.

Two months of attending red carpet events and talk shows with Logan. Going on dinner dates and parties with Logan. They had even gone to a few clubs and a concert in that time.

It had been difficult for Kate at first, but she quickly got the hang of the life of a celebrity. It helped that things had been quiet on the darker side of her life. There had been no problems or tasks for her and her team since her father left, so she had yet to see or speak to Simon.

But she knew he was around. He was part of her silent team. Their sole job was to protect her from the shadows unless she needed their help to complete a task.

'If I have to tell this fake story of how we first met one more time to a live audience I might lose my shit.'

Kate chuckled at the text she got from Logan. He was currently doing yet another late-night talk show interview. It was being recorded earlier in the day, to be ready for airing later that night. Kate had declined to join him on this one. She had a class to teach at the community center, and she had already missed her last three classes.

'It's a cute story. People like to hear it.'

She sent off the reply, then placed her new phone back in her bag.

Kate had gotten so fed up with the constant beeping of her last one that she had finally caved and gotten a new one. She still kept the other one and gave out her old number to most people who asked.

Her new number was very exclusive information apparently.

Kate turned back to the group of kids in her class and began to go over the routine they had been working on.

A few minutes later, there was a commotion outside the classroom. Kate ignored it, assuming it was probably some older kids getting scolded for trying to catch a peek at her again.

But when the commotion got louder, Kate paused the music and stepped toward the door to investigate.

However, just as she reached the door, it was shoved open violently, hitting Kate in the process.

She stumbled back a few steps, barely avoiding falling on her ass, as a reporter with a camera walked into the room, with an angry director hot on his heels.

Spitting out a few profanities in French, Kate clutched her forehead, which had received the brunt of the impact.

Taking a few deep breaths, Kate contained her anger and began to step toward the two men that stood arguing over public property and whether or not the reporter was allowed in the building.

Patting the director, Allan, on the shoulder, she assured him that she could handle the situation, before turning to the reporter, who already had his camera aimed at her.

"Sir, do you realize that you hit me with that door when you forced your way into this classroom full of little kids?" she asked before he could even snap one picture.

The man lowered his camera slowly, the realization of how much trouble he could be in finally hitting him.

"Now do I need to press charges or are you going to leave my classroom right now? And please be aware there are about thirty witnesses behind me, so choose wisely," as she spoke, Kate was the picture of calm and collected.

It was almost scary how calm she was.

The reporter quickly made for the door, rushing out of the center without another word.

Dismissing her class for the day, Kate picked up her bag and walked over to Allan's office, giving her forehead another rub as she walked.

"I think it might be better if I stay away from the center for a little while," she said as she walked into the small office.

Allan chuckled.

"We can deal with a few reporters here and there Kate. It's not a problem. Besides, you've brought the center some publicity, which is always good. It brings more donations," he told her, digging through a few files as he spoke.

Kate sighed.

"Besides if you left now it would look bad for you, as if you're choosing the life of a celebrity over this center."

Kate laughed. She knew that Allan did not mean it as a threat, simply a point to be made. A very valid one at that. The thought had not occurred to her. Man, this life really comes with a whole new set of rules. It really changes the way you think, she thought to herself.

"Alright then, if you're sure it's not a problem, I'll stay," she said before walking out.

She headed straight for Logan's apartment, where they had agreed to meet after the interview.

As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she could hear Logan jogging down the stairs.

He smiled when he saw her, but the smile quickly dropped when he saw her forehead.

"What the fuck happened?" he exclaimed, rushing across the room to inspect her bruise.

"A stupid reporter tried to get into my class earlier. I just so happened to be standing behind the door when he barged in," she explained, closing her eyes when Logan's cool fingers touched the bruise. When she opened them again she could see the anger on Logan's face.

"Logan, I'm fine. It's not as bad as it looks, I swear," she told him, holding his large hands in hers.

Before he could reply, the elevator doors dinged open. Looking over her head, Logan quickly stepped in front of her, between the unwelcome guest and her.

"Who the fuck are you and how did you get into my apartment?" Logan almost growled. Placing a hand on his arm to calm him, Kate peered around Logan and sighed.

"It's fine. That's Simon. He's one of my silent men," she told him, moving to stand beside him.

"Hi. Nice to meet you. You must be the new boyfriend," Simon spoke with a smile, but his tone was devoid of any emotion.

"What's going on? Why are you here?" Kate asked, with her hand still on Logan's arm. Simon eyed the contact but didn't question it.

"I came to confirm the hit on the journalist that attacked you earlier. I asked Mr. Delaquour, but he said it was your call," he replied.

"He didn't attack me, Simon, it was an accident. There's no need to kill the man. Besides, this is America. You can't just make people disappear and not expect questions to be asked. Just let it be. I'm fine," Kate delivered the command sternly, leaving no room for arguments. Simon nodded. Logan, on the other hand, didn't seem to get the message.

"Kate, he can't just get away with hurting you. If you're not going to authorize a hit, at least press charges against him," he murmured. Kate paused for a moment and thought about it. Since the bruise was very visible, it might be the best option, to avoid other unwanted rumors springing up.

She sighed.

"Fine. I'll report the incident to the police. But that's it."

Logan smiled and pulled out his phone. While he called the local police station, Simon stepped out to inform the rest of Kate's team.

She didn't miss the sour look on his face as he walked out. I guess someone doesn't like that I listened to someone else's advice over his, Kate thought to herself as she walked over to the kitchen.

I hope this doesn't become a problem later...

A few minutes later, a detective arrived and took her statement, taking detailed notes as she explained what happened.
