Later that same night, Logan got a call.

Glancing at the phone screen, Logan chuckled to himself.

"I thought this was against the rules," he said into the phone once he had picked up.

"Well, some rules are meant to be broken," Kate replied a smile in her voice.

"Even those set by you?" he asked as he sat at the foot of his bed.

"Even those. Although only by me. Everyone else has to follow them without exception," she answered. Logan chuckled. He could hear her footsteps through the phone. Glancing down at the watch on his wrist, he frowned.

"It's almost three am over there. What are you doing awake?" he asked.

"Is it? Well, let me see... Nope. My watch says it's 8:52 pm where I am. Is there something wrong with yours maybe?" she asked, and Logan could practically see the smile on her face.

Logan glanced down at his watch.

"Kate. Are you in New York?" he asked after a moment of thought.

"Better. I'm downstairs. You wanna come to say hi?" she replied and laughed to herself when she heard him rush through the apartment rather than answer her question.

Within a moment, she was wrapped in his arms as he spun around in circles. Their laughter filled the room as both of them clung to each other like the world was ending.

"I missed you so much," Kate whispered into Logan's ear while he continued to cling to her.

After a moment, Logan finally put her back onto her feet, but he was unwilling to let go of her completely, so he wrapped his arms around her waist and held her against his body.

"Why didn't you tell me you were coming? I could have ordered food or-" Logan's frantic rant was cut off with a quick kiss from Kate.

"It's fine. I already ate," she murmured against his lips. Logan could only nod in response.

"Besides, I wanted to surprise you," she chuckled. While he stood in the center of the foyer, trying to collect his thoughts, Kate stepped out of his arms, turning to pick up the bag she dropped near the doors, stepped around him, and began carrying her small suitcase up the stairs. Halfway up, Logan appeared beside her and gently took the bag out of her hands with one hand, and replaced it with his other hand.

"So how did the audition go?" Kate asked as they walked up the rest of the stairs.

"I think I did well. But I guess I'll have to wait and see if the casting director agrees. I know I have a lot of competition for that role, but all I can do now is be patient," Logan replied, turning to walk toward his room.

"Logan, where are you going?" Kate asked when she realized that they weren't walking toward the guest room.

"You think I'm going to let you sleep in the guest room after not having you with me for 4 nights?"  he said as he walked up to his bedroom and stepped inside, letting go of her hand in the process.

"Logan..." Kate murmured as she followed him, almost like a warning.

"Kate," he said in response. Until he glanced back and found her hovering at the doorway.

"That... it was different and you know it. I was grieving. We set those rules early on for a reason. Sleeping together, even if it was really just sleeping, would complicate things and you know that," she whispered halfheartedly. Even she didn't believe in what she was saying. It was already too late to avoid complications. It was already complicated beyond belief.
