Today would have been Betty White 100th birthday and there was supposed to be a birthday tribute for her today that we were going to go to but then she died on New Year Eve. My mom had to get a refund. I was devastated. I thought she was going to make it. She had lived a fulfilled life and was a trailblazer. The first woman game show host. Today is also Martin Luther King Day and I would usually do a special tribute to honor his legacy. Watching a marathon of movies that either is about Martin Luther King, black history in general, or the majority of the cast are great black actors, or a famous black actor is the star. Last week I found out that Sidney Poitier died. Now he was also a trailblazer. He was an amazing black actor and the first black actor who won an Oscar for best leading mad. So Everday last week I watched a movie with my mom that had him in it.
We started with my mom's favorite "A patch of Blue" which is about a white blind girl befriending a black man who helped her to be more independent. Sweet movie. Then we watched both To Sir with Love and To Sir with love 2. He's a teacher. In the first movie he was a teacher in England. In the second movie he was a teacher in San Francisco. Then we watched Guess who's coming to dinner and it's about an interracial couple that is about to get married. A white woman wanted her family to meet the man she is going to marry. They also invited his parents. This movie actually was released 6 months after the case Loving Vs. The State of Virginia. There were still 17 states that was illegal to marry someone of a different race. Of course, they are in California which is in the west and different from the south, but it was mentioned the reality of how it would be a challenged for them. Then was In the Heat of the Night where he played a Police detective name Mister Tibbs. I love how he refused to play stereotypical rolls and played something meaningful. There was also a sequel to that called "They call me Mister Tibbs!" and we get to see his family, but I prefer the original. Then was Lillies of the Field. That was the movie he won an Oscar for. His character helped the nuns in building a chapel and teaching them English. Because Ashley cancelled on Rachel for their movie night, I had invited Rachel to watch The Defiant Ones when I'm watching it with my mom. In that movie, Sidney's character was part of a chain gain and escaped with a white guy. The last movie I watched with my mom was on Martin Luther King's actual birthday Saturday, January 15 "A Raising in the Sun and it's kind of like a play. During the majority of the movie, it's about a black family in their apartment. And it's about the American dream.
That day I moved my Martin Luther King marathon to that day since I plan on having a Betty White marathon today. To start my Martin Luther King marathon, I watched "Te Ata" which is based on a true story of an "Indian" she was the first Indian who went to college, and she became an actress and storyteller. Telling stories of her people. Her real name was Mary, but she was given the name Te Ata which means "The morning". I looked her up. I found out she was born on December 3, 1895 and died on October 25, 1995. She was almost 100 when she died. That was a great movie. She actually performed at the white house for Franklin D. Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor. Eleanor actually named a lake in New York State after her. And Te Ata also performed for Queen Elizabeth. She obviously lived a fulfilled life too. Incredible. I also watched a movie that is about oppressing people with voting, and I thought it was really interesting and I learn new stuff. Unfortunately, I had to go to work. I wished I had requested today off but I only requested Martin Luther King Day off. Next year I want to request the whole weekend so I can watch more movies. Briar brought me to work and then picked me up. Then we went back to my house, and we watched my favorite thing I normally watch every year "Our friend Martin." Briar liked it and I hope next year we can watch more movies because he needs to be educated.
Today I watched Betty White Goes wild with my mom on Disney+. At the time Betty was 91 and she talked about her love for big cats, and we get to see different kinds of cats like Lions. Cheaters, the Cougars, and so on. It was cute. Betty White truly loves animals. Now we are watching the Golden Girls. I might squeeze in a couple more MLK type movies later. Hopefully if there is time. I love Betty White and I wish she had lived to be 100. That is my goal.
