"Sersi?" You murmur, frowning softly. The apartment was bare of all her stuff and there was a rustling from the next room. "Sersi, where are you?" You call out, wandering towards the rustling.

There's no answer, and anxiety rises up in your chest.

You walk into the bedroom, only to see Sersi packing clothes into a small bag, tear tracks running down her cheeks.

"Sersi...?" You whisper, not quite believing what you're seeing.

"Y/N. I'm- you weren't meant to be home for another hour." She says, and you scoff.

"Ok well I'll just go outside and walk around for an hour so I can find my house empty!" You snap back, and she sets her jaw.

"I can't stay, Y/N. You know that." She murmurs, which makes you furrow your eyebrows.

"Why not?" You ask, voice softer.

"You're mortal. I'm not. I- I can't face it. With this war, and you being drafted.. I can't." She admits, voice cracking as tears well up in her deep brown eyes.

"I thought we were in love." You say. Sersi's bottom lip shakes as she tries desperately to hold in a sob at the look of pure betrayal on your face.

"We are! I just can't watch you die, Y/N." She says firmly, grabbing her bag and walking past you.

You grab her wrist, and she turns to face you.

"Please," You whisper, "don't go." The sadness in her eyes tells you how conflicted she is, but when she gently pulls away, you know there's no convincing her.

"I'm sorry." She murmurs, pressing a soft kiss to your cheek before turning and leaving the house.

You stand, staring at the empty space where she once was with disbelief. You couldn't believe she actually left you. What would you do now?

1942

A man named Dr Abraham Erskine had approached you while out training, talking about a program to create the best soldiers in the world to use against the Nazis. You were still depressed after Sersi, and a little drunk so you'd agreed.

So, flash forward, and you're in a lab, surrounded by men in white coats. Dr Erskine ushered you towards the metal tube that he'd claimed could make you into a "super soldier". You frown. How can this work?

"Take your shirt off." He commands. You turn to stare at him, confused. He doesn't give an explanation, only telling you to remove your shirt once again.

You give in, unbuttoning and pulling off the khaki green shirt of your formal army uniform.

A little self conscious, you cross your arms over your chest, but Dr Erskine ushers them out of the way.

"Get in." He commands, clearly very busy and not in the mood to haggle, so you obey and stand on the ledge of the tube.

"Are you sure this is safe?" You question, and Dr Erskine rolls his eyes.

"Yes! Get in, we don't have all day, L/N!" He urges, poking at your back. You swat him away before taking a deep breath. The metal door of the tube opens and you step inside.

You turn, peeking out of the small, circular window they built in.

"Ok. Let's go, in three..." you hear a muffled mans voice from somewhere in the lab.

Suddenly, you regret agreeing. Suddenly, you wish Sersi was there holding your hand. Anxiety rises up quickly in your chest, heavy on your heart and your breathing quickens.

"Hey, uh I'm not feeling too safe in here!" You exclaim feebly. God, what wouldn't you do to have Sersi wrapped up in your arms right now. Just thinking of it calms you down.

"Two..." the man says, your anxiety shoots right back up and you try to focus on happy thoughts.

"One."

Pain explodes all over your body. Bright white lights take over your vision until you can't see. You hadn't even noticed you were screaming until you heard it yourself.

A few seconds pass, you clench your hands into fists and grit your teeth, groaning.

A few more seconds, the pain slowly but surely subsides, and the white light fades gently. You let out a breath and open your eyes. Your jaw aches from clenching it and your whole body feels swollen and... itchy.

The door to the metal tube opens and the harsh lights of the lab fall over you.

"Mr L/N? Mr L/N are you ok?" You hear Dr Erskine's voice and you snap back to reality.

"What?" You murmur lazily.

A collective sigh of relief goes around the lab. You lick your dry lips, slowly lifting your sweaty body off of the metal.

Two women and a man come running up to you, holding their arms out in case you toppled over.

"How do you feel, L/N?" A woman with a soft British accent asks. She has dark brown hair pulled up into victory curls, and dark brown eyes. She has a bold red lipstick, and she has a formal dark blue dress on.

"Bigger," You reply, "and itchy." The woman chuckles at your answer.

"Well, you are indeed bigger, soldier." She confirms, and you frown before looking down at yourself.

You're ripped. My god, if Sersi could see you now, huh?

"Y/N L/N?" Comes an unfamiliar voice from behind you.

You turn, and you're met with the sight of none other than Steve Rogers, the famous Captain America and his best friend and Howling Commando, James Barnes.

"How can I help you fine gentlemen?" You ask, a smirk forming on your lips.
