2023

What had your life come to?

One minute, you were drowning in the ocean, thinking of your lost love, the next you were being removed from the ice and thrown into the 21st century with no map.

New York had changed, that much you were sure of. There were massive colourful signs everywhere and ton of more people.

This new modern world has been a challenge, even after years out of the ice. Steve wasn't adapting any quicker, so you'd both donned the title of the "old man" within the Avengers.

Now, you were fighting some alien named Thanos with an odd obsession with killing half the universe.

Thanos had snapped his fingers with that stupid gauntlet in Wakanda, and you'd had to sit by and watch as your new friends crumbled to dust one by one.

T'Challa, Sam, Wanda, Groot, Rocket.. everyone was now gone.

And your heart shattered as you watched Bucky fade away after you felt you'd only just got him back.

You'd sat and prayed that the Avengers that were off-world hadn't been affected, but it was a naive thought.

Steve had placed a steady hand on your shoulder, and had promised you'd avenge them all, but the hope it was meant to spark only served to fuel the tears slipping down your cheeks.

Five years later...

"It's official, you're all crazy." You state, tucking your hands into your pockets and shaking your head.

"Come on! Time travel can be achieved!" Bruce tries to convince you, but your unimpressed look tells him he didn't quite succeed.

"With that party pooper attitude, we definitely won't get anywhere." Scott Lang, the Ant-Man, murmurs, and you frown.

"Who are you again?" You retort. He presses his lips together and nods, accepting defeat.

"Y/N, if this can work. If we can get the stones, then everyone's back. Think of what that could mean." Steve whispers to you, and you pause to consider it.

If it worked, it could mean getting all of your friends back. You bite the inside of your lip.

"Fine." You concede.

A week later...

After Bruce's experiment with Scott, you really thought the plan would have run it's course, but it seems not.

And you really hadn't expected Tony to join in on the plan, but seeing him there helped to ease your mind.

He had proven that it could work, and everyone was in on the plan. If all went well, you could have all the stones and snap everyone back into existence.

The thought made your heart leap.

So, all dressed in the white and red suits for travelling through the quantum realm, you and what was left of the Avengers get ready for anything.

Bruce, Clint and yourself looked nervous, but Steve, Natasha, Tony and Scott looked confident. God knows what could happen in the past, but there was no turning back now.

As Bruce counts to zero, you hold your breath, and all of a sudden, you feel like you're being drowned in an ice bath but falling rapidly at the same time.

Your brain is moving a thousand miles a minute, and you can't keep up with it. Colours swirl around you and you try and catch a glimpse of each and every one of them.

Then, you're completely still, and stood in the middle of the street with Steve, Tony, Bruce and Scott.

"Did it work?" You ponder.

All of a sudden, different versions of you and Steve come bolting past where you're all stood in the alley.

You exchange a look with your Steve and he raises his eyebrows, releasing a heavy sigh.

"Welcome back to 2012, everyone." Tony says, and you whistle lowly.

"Well then, time to get Loki's sceptre." You mutter.

Time skip to October

You and Steve are stood side by side, alone against Thanos and his entire army, with Thor laying unconscious next to you, you feel like the scrawny 16-year-old you'd once been a long, long time ago.

"Ready?" Steve asks, and you let out a deep sigh.

"As ready as I'll ever be, buddy." You answer. He gives a fleeting grin, face covered with ash and dirt and blood on the corner of his mouth.

Steve readies his broken shield and Thor's old hammer, and you ready your own weapons.

"Let's do this." He growls, and you both take a step forwards, but Steve stops.

Through your comms, you hear a very familiar voice.

"Hey Steve, Y/N," Sam's voice floods your ears, "on your left."

You both turn to your left. A fiery golden circle opens, and Sam swoops through in his Falcon suit.

Hundreds more portals open, with your lost friends emerging through them and gazing over at Thanos' army.

You spot Peter Parker in the crowd, and your heart lifts knowing how much Tony had missed him and what this would mean the world to your billionaire friend.

You spot Bucky, and he catches your eye, sending you a grin.

You ready your weapon once more, the pain from your injuries and your exhaustion ebbing away as happiness soaks straight through down to your bones.

You glance over at Steve, who's already looking at you with a grin on his face. You give him a nod, and his grin widens.

"Avengers!" He yells, everyone holds their breath, waiting for his call to action.

"Assemble."
