READER PRONOUNS: HE/HIM

1945

Two years ago, you'd been dealing with life as a supersoldier. Two years ago, you'd been lost in life.

Now, you were apart of Captain America's team of fighters. With two supersoldiers on the team, you were practically unstoppable.

That's until the fateful day on the train. The day Bucky fell.

You couldn't quite believe it. The man you'd grown so close to was dead. Gone. Steve was crushed, since he was convinced it was his fault.

You both sat side by side, the same grieving look on your faces.

"We've had a tip. Hydra is sending two planes full of bombs to America." Peggy informs as she walks into the room.

You both sit up straight, attention on her now. "Where?" You question, and she sighs.

"Still in their hangars, thankfully, but we need two people to go take them down." She tells you, making the answer she expected obvious.

"So.. you need us?" Steve murmurs, and Peggy nods.

"I wouldn't ask if we didn't need you." She says, voice softer. You glance over at Steve, and he glances back.

"I'll do it if you will." You whisper to him, which earns a half-smile. He nods at Peggy and she clasps her hands together.

"I'll get the documents." She says.

A couple days later...

"Ready, Captain L/N?" Peggy asks, and you give her a nod. You're all suited up in your dark blue and black suit, similar to that of Steve's but without the patriotism.

"Can I speak to Steve before I head out?" You ask. Peggy hesitates for a second but lets you do so.

You wander up to Steve, who's pushing the helmet on to his head.

"Hey, soldier," you greet, "ready for this?"

He turns to look at you with a sad look in his eyes. He nods, jaw tight.

"Listen, Steve, if.. if I don't come back from this-" you start.

"No. Don't say that, Y/N." He cuts you off, eyes glazed with emotion.

"If I don't come back from this," you repeat, "find Sersi. Tell her.. god, I don't know. Tell her something good, eh?"

You'd told Steve about Sersi after a couple missions together. He'd revealed his infatuation for Peggy so you'd figured he wouldn't mind hearing about the woman you loved so much.

Steve bit the inside of his cheek. Tears were building in his waterline. "I won't need to, cause you'll be coming back." He argues, but you just smile.

"I have a bad feeling about this one, Steve. I don't know.. I just..." you trail off, your own tears starting to fall before you could stop them.

Steve pulls you into a hug. You reciprocate, tears falling faster. On the skin of your neck you can feel Steve's tears too.

When you pull away, you give a humourless laugh. "Well, look at us. You'd think we'd be a bit tougher after everything." You joke, but Steve doesn't laugh.

You share a moment of silence. Steve opens his mouth to say something, but is cut off.

"Captain Rogers!"

"Captain L/N!"

You both stand to attention. A sinking feeling in your chest told you that you needed to say something to Steve.

"Steve, I didn't know him for as long as you did, but... I know Bucky would be proud of you. I know I sure am." You manage to get out, a couple more tears running down your cheeks.

Steve's lower lip wobbles, but he doesn't say anything. You close your eyes for a second, and when you open them, you're met with Steve's blue eyes once again filled with tears.

"Captain L/N! Now!" Peggy's impatient voice rings out from behind you.

"Well, that's me. Goodbye, Steve." You say. You manage a weak smile and turn on your heel.

"Bye, Y/N." He whispers, so quiet you barely catch it.

You don't turn around as you walk over to Peggy.

A week later...

Your breathing is ragged as you steer the Hydra plane. The engine was damaged and smoking, yet you forced it to keep going.

"Captain! If this ship reaches American soil it'll kill the people below! Do something!" Peggy shouts through the radio.

"I get that, thanks Peggy!" You yell back. You wrack your brain for anything you could do, but each time it comes up with only one solution.

Into the water.

Isn't it funny how you'd known that this would be your last mission?

"What are you going to do, L/N?!" She questions.

"The water's the only place these bombs'll be harmless. I've gotta- gotta land it in the ocean." You tell her.

"You can't! I can't lose you, Captain!" She pleads, but only chuckle.

"Tell Steve to keep his promise. To do what I told him to." You murmur, which warrants silence from the other end of the radio.

"I'll tell him, Y/N." Peggy's voice is soft.

You can't help the tears that spill over as you angle the plane downwards, and your vision blurs as you gaze into the blue ocean below.

You can't help but think about Sersi as the plane sinks deeper and deeper into the ocean.
