Chapter 14 Preperations

It was very late that night, I knew that I should sleep but I couldn't. I wasn't looking forward to the event which was going to be taking place tomorrow. It might be good for us, it might give su the answers that we need. It didn't encourage me anymore about the whole thing. I hadn't heard much from Aiden either, I was still very concerned about what happened last night.

I found myself in the kitchen once again, sitting on the bench with a cup of tea in my hand. We didn't have a lot of room there, I had tried to be quiet so as to not wake my mam up or disturb her. I got a fright when I heard the door opening. I looked quickly to see my father walking into the house.

"You're still up?" There wasn't the usual harshness in his voice. He knew that being loud wasn't really an option at the moment, as well as the fact I was never really up this late. "What is it?" He took his hat off and put his coat on the banister, so that he could put it straight back on in the morning.

"I've been invited to the event tomorrow." My voice was monotone, it seemed to be how we communicated best. "Are you going?" He looked slightly startled but a smile started to creep onto his face. I couldn't tell what was going through his head at the moment, nor could I tell how well he could think at the current moment.

"Of course I will." He sounded a little happier. "Good on you, getting into the business so early." There it was, the focus was directly on the idea of me getting into the job. He didn't even know that I was friends with Emi, he didn't even know how I found out about the event. He just started to focus on me getting the job, I wished I had Aiden there to share my annoyance. "You'll be going there with me one day."

That was extremely unlikely, I would rather get a job mucking out horses stables before joining him at his job. "So, when are we going?" I raised an eyebrow in an attempt to get back to what I wanted to know. "My friend didn't really give me the details." He didn't seem to pick up on the second utterance as he leant on the counter not too far from me.

"We will be leaving at around five. We've got to get a bus most of the way and then walk." I thought that the business was very well off...they could've at least helped dad get better travel. I wasn't going to dwell too much on that. "Make sure to dress well, alright?" He gave me a pat on the shoulder. "Gotta make a good impression on the higher ups." I turned away and rolled my eyes.

"I know, I've been told that already today." I jumped down from the counter and put my cup on the side, ready to be washed later. "I'm going to head to bed. Goodnight." I gave a wave before heading over to the stairs. I heard him repeat 'goodnight' to me. He seemed to be in a happier mood than he usually was, that was a nice change.

I had finished the majority of my work for the weekend so all I had to do was put my clothing onto Aiden's bed so that the creases would hopefully disappear overnight. I got into bed and attempted to sleep. It didn't come easy but I managed to get a few hours of rest.

I woke up rather early the next morning. I still had to go to work today. I had a few jobs but this morning I would be dog-walking. I do this every Saturday and I liked it significantly more than my other jobs. I quickly got dressed in jeans and a t-shirt before heading downstairs and grabbing something small to eat.

The dogs were very well-behaved today. It made me happier and more confident that the day could actually go my way. Maybe I would have some fun at the party, meet new people and get more information. I didn't know what kind of information Emi and I were looking for, I just knew to keep my eyes peeled for anything suspicious.

I was ready a few hours early so I headed downstairs to wait. Father was still in his room, as far as I was aware, he hadn't left all day. He would have usually gone to work by now, even on Saturdays. I was a little bit surprised to see my mam awake in her bed. She widened her eyes and put her hands together when she saw me.

"Look at you!" Her tone was high and she had a smile on her face. I did a mock spin so that she could see the entirety of it. She had probably seen me wear it before, since it was the best clothing that I currently own. I had grown quite a bit the past few years, without money or time to go shopping. "So handsome. Where are you going?"

I gave a thumbs up in response to her compliment and sat down on the settee. "I was invited to the party which dad's going to." I gave a small grin. "Emi's family is incharge there, I think. I didn't get much detail other than they work together." I shrugged slightly, not forgetting the conversation which I had overheard. "I think I'm supposed to be her date."

My mam chuckled and shook her ehad. She pretty much knew all about Emi, most of what I knew anyway. Mam had always been the one who I could tell anything to. "Well then she better be careful." She joked lightly. She knew that there was nothing going on. "Someone else might scoop you away for the night."

"Don't be silly." I had a grin on my face but the reaction was immediate. "I highly doubt that anyone would be interested." I was highly doubtful that anyone at this event would be interested in me or that I would be interested in them. "I'm just waiting for dad to come downstairs."

Mam gave me a sad smile but she didn't mention anything of what I said. "Well, you two have fun. I'm sure that you'll be by Emi's side the entire night." I shook my head and stood back up as I heard the bedroom door open and shut. Father walked in wearing a rather old-looking suit. "Dear, that could do with some ironing."

My father brushed it off with a small smile. Even though he had been grumpy recently, he did seem to have cleaned himself up rather well. "The creases will go once we go out." He leant over and kissed mam on the cheek. "Everything alright here for a few hours?" My mam nodded and smiled, patting dad's hand.

"Everything will be fine." She looked between the two of us. "Now, you two go and have a good day. It'll be a good one. I can feel it."
