Chapter 49 Recovery
Harlow's POV
With a little bit of explanation, Dean was on our side. He knew more of the story then we did in some aspects. He was close to Finlay and Travis, he even helped Travis get his grounding in the human world. They had all split up at once. After the fight which tore down the packhouse, most of them left.
"You should sleep."Aiden told me as he joined me by the back door. I had been sitting there for a good hour or so. "They're not going to come tonight." His voice was quiet and calm. It made my chest feel warmer and colder at the same time.
"I know." I muttered back to him. "It doesn't hurt though." My eyes were still trained on the same single spot of grass as they had been an hour ago too. I had a lot to think over. "How's mam?" I pulled my knees up to my chin.
"Stable, They think she's getting better." A small smile reached my lips. It would be a whole load of pressure off if she was with us right now, healthy and like she used to be. I don't ever think she'd be how she used to be, though a little more certainty was nice.
"What are we going to do?" I frowned. "I can't just go back to school after all this." Aiden shook his head in the corner of my eye. I sighed heavily. "I don't want to."
"I know, any excuse to stay out of school." He reached over and ruffled my hair. "I know what you mean. Maybe we can ask dad for a note?" I raised my eyebrow at him and chuckled.
"No, that'd ruin my perfect attendance. That wouldn't work." I rested my chin on my knees and wrapped my arms around them. "I guess I'll go, will it be safe?" Aiden didn't get a chance to reply as a voice came from behind us.
"No." I spun around to see Dean int he doorway. "There's werewolves all over, even those who are unaware that they're loyal to Travis." I raised an eyebrow and narrowed my eyes at him.
"Aren't you?" My words were careful dn curious, I still didn't understand how much of this worked.
"I don't have a wolf anymore." He came over and sat next to us on the steps. "The wolf is what's loyal to the alpha no matter what. Then there's human mind and relations. In my opinion, he's a cruel asshole who deserves whatever you guys throw at him."
Aiden chuckled lightly and nodded. "I agree with your opinion." The awkward silence resumed as we looked up to the sky. "It's amazing how this was so different a few months ago."
"You mean how our lives weren't in danger?" I said sarcastically before my tone evened out. "I agree. A whole world which we didn't know existed." Dean patted my shoulder and stood up again.
"A world I left behind. I had the same feeling going into the human world. I knew nothing." He then spread his arms out with a proud smile. "Look at me now." He chuckled and headed back inside the house, calling behind him "The living room is your best bet for sleep."
We waved to him as he left and returned to staring at nothing. "This will work out." Aiden muttered under his breath as he scooted closer to me. "It will." He moved and wrapped an arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer. "We'll get through this together bud." I smiled slightly at the use of the nickname.
"If you say so bro." He chuckled and we sat there for a few more moments. I looked down and sighed. "I should go get some sleep." His arm fell from my shoulders as I stood up and turned around. "Goodnight, try and practice what you preach, yeah?" He chuckled and shook his head.
"I'll try, Goodnight." I walked back into the very crowded shelter and made my way to the living room, where towels covered the worn-down settee. I tried to get somewhat comfortable but the exhaustion hit me before I had much time to think.
-Aiden's POV-
I watched my brother head back into the house with sadness creeping through my heart. I didn't want him to get involved in any of this, I didn't really have much of a choice but I still blamed myself. He shouldn't be worrying about his friends' lives being in danger or our mother potentially dying.
"You really should listen to him." A deep voice made me jump, I turned around to face Ralph, a playful glare on my face. "You're too easy to scare when you're tired." He came over and sat beside me, wrapping me in his warm embrace. I sighed softly and leant into him.
"Can I just sleep here?" He laughed, I could feel the vibration all through my body. "You're too comfortable." I mumbled, I felt him shiver slightly.
"If you would actually sleep." The nodding of his head made his hair sway slightly. "I'd only do this for you, you know? Maybe the pups." I smiled and snuggled closer to him.
"What are we going to do?" I didn't want to ask him that, The same thing that Harlow had asked me. I wanted the question to be out of my head, into the open and resolved. I didn't want it to be repeated over and over again until that was all we heard.
"We are going to relax for the time being and wait until morning."He started to draw patterns on the top of my arm with his thumb. "None of us would stand a chance going back there tonight." His voice was strained.
"Ralph?" I looked up at him. He looked down at me with curiosity. His emerald orbs gleamed in the dark. "I love you." The sparkle in his eyes grew brighter as a wide smile appeared on his face, his back had straightened and his grip had tightened slightly.
"I love you too Aiden. To the moon and back."
