Chapter 25 Realisations and allies
Karim's POV
I watched as Harlow left the room before turning back to the others with a raised eyebrow and crossed arms. "So werewolves in the forest? That's news to me." I said rather sarcastically before shaking my head. "Not at all, you know you're not very subtle."
"We shouldn't have to be." Lathen, who seemed to be the alpha, spoke. "This has been our home for centuries now, this forest is all we've known for generations." His eyes narrowed. "Surely you know that? Being one of us yourself." I grunted lightly.
"Just because of what I am, it doesn't mean I'm taught anything." I was tense even though I tried to seem somewhat relaxed against the kitchen chair. "We know nothing about the wolves in this forest. That I know of." I was unsure. I knew nothing about the wolves who lived here. I just knew that Emi's parents were dead set on destroying the place. "I'm assuming the obvious here. Pack rivalry?"
"That seems like the obvious reason." Ralph said as he leant against some cupboards. He was clearly staying close to the door in order to get there quickly if Aiden needed him. "Though, we don't know of many werewolves who work with humans. We're rather certain aht it's Travis."
"Sparsfeild?" I tilted my head to the side and let some air out of my mouth. "Yeah, that sounds like him. Well done on your deduction." I clapped sarcastically. I was sure they didn't appreciate it, but it was helping me through the conversation. "Well, now you've figured that out. What's the rest of your great plan?" I leant forward and rested my elbows on my knees.
"Why would we tell you?" Lathen asked curiously. I could see the genuine want for an answer on his face. "A random wolf comes into our forest after we've been attacked and starts to question our tactics? This seems a little strange to me."
Ralph nodded along with his alpha. "I don't blame you for being hesitant, I'd be too. I've really got no ties to any pack." They gave me disbelieving stares. I raised my hands a little in surrender and tried to make my tone softer. This was a rather sensitive topic for most werewolves to talk about, not having a pack. "I could have a pack if I wanted to. I just don't like the morals of the one proposed to me."
"So, you would rather go without a wolf then to have twisted morals?" Ralph questioned. That's what happened when you didn't have a pack for so long. There are other ways to lose your wolf, such as being disowned through rituals or not turning for a certain amount of time. "I find that hard to believe."
"Can't be disowned if you never belonged to one." I had a sarcastic smile on my face as I held up a peace sign like I had seen teenagers do a lot. "Like I said, no emotional ties." I was still being given faces of disbelief. Lathen sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"I guess, if you're not attacking us it's a step in the right direction." He then turned to Ralph, gesturing towards me. "What's your decision?" I furrowed my eyebrows at the interaction. Lathen was clearly the alpha, I hadn't seen an alpha take someone else's opinions on board.
"He needs to know what happened." Ralph nodded as though finalising the decision. He turned to me, his eyes hardening. "It doesn't just sound like Travis. He came over and threatened us." He paused for a moment in thought. "He also broke into Aidne's apartment."
The sentence made my blood run cold. Aiden was Harlow's brother, the fact that he was broken into showed that the werewolves weren't afraid to get involved with the humans by directly threatening them. That could happen to Harlow. It made me want to leave him there and forbid Emi from seeing him. It was a threat to his life which I don't want to risk.
"So the plan is?" I stood up from the chair and started to pace around. "They aren't afraid to attack the humans. I doubt there's enough werewolves wanting to get involved." I stopped for a moment once I had said this and shook my head, I didn't actually know that. I didn't know alot about werewolf society, there might be plenty of packs who would be on our side.
"Actually, we haven't tried that." Lathen mumbled as he played with his necklace which held a sort of crest on it. "We've asked Liam but we didn't actually discuss anything." I didn't know why he mentioned that so I just shrugged it off.
"So there's no plan?" I wanted to make sure that I understood that correctly. They looked at me with blank expressions. "Lovely." I mumbled and looked down, running a hand through my hair. "Emerson won't let me back out of this." I groaned and clenched my fists.
"Emerson?" Ralph raised an eyebrow, which I ignored.
"I'm pretty certain we'll help you." I didn't want to show them that I was as invested in this as I actually was. "Though an actual game plan should at least be on the table." I was slightly judging their techniques and planning ability. Yet I didn't know if I could do any better.
"Alright, well." Lathen trailed off. "I suppose yourself and Harlow should get to know the rest of the family." I almost winced at how casually and sincerely he said family. Harlow was probably the only one who didn't know about the fact we were werewolves.
"Do you-"
Ralph was interrupted by the door opening and two panicked humans coming inside. I was immediately feeling alarmed as the startled and scared expressions stared back at us. Aiden was looking at Ralph and Harlow was looking at me. "We've got to go to the hospital." The world seemed to go still as I tried to comprehend the words.
"I can get you there quickly." I started to head to the door before I turned back around to Ralph. I could see some heads poking out of the room which I couldn't see earlier due to the closed door. "I'll meet you back where we met in about five minutes." He nodded shortly and I left the packhouse, wondering what on earth I was doing.
