Chapter 34 Discoveries
Harlow's POV
It was very overwhelming. I thought that I had gotten used to the idea of werewolves existing but I hadn't. The more and more they talked about packs and wolf forms the more my anxiety began to grow. I hadn't heard from my father in ages and I was in a room which was almost full of strangers.
"So, where do humans fit into this?" Eben asked intrigued. I lifted my head up from where my gaze was placed on the floor.
"Well Travis lives with humans, in the human world." Emi nodded, her awkwardness still hadn't vanished. "He got a business, has humans who work for him, I'm pretty sure most would do anything for the money he has." She mumbled something under her breath which I couldn't quite here.
"Why would they go after the forest? Go after us?" Beaumont looked towards Lathen, who then turned to Eben, who then turned to Ralph and Randall. The feeling of cluelessness was like smoke from incense.
"Maybe they're after a pack?" Rhodes asked quietly. "I would be after that many years." Ralph shook his head and ran a hand through his hair.
"Once you lose your wolf, you can't get it back." The words sent shivers down my spine. I didn't want to imagine how it felt to the werewolves int he room.
"Revenge?" Karim suggested. "Did you do anything to piss him off?" Lathen shifted from one foot to the other.
"Not that I know of." He unfolds his arms. "We're a peaceful pack. We don't usually bother packs who aren't our allies." I tilted my head to the side, there are more werewolves around here. That would've been lovely to know.
"What happened to the rest of his pack?" Aiden questioned and elant forward. The cogs were turning in his mind, he was putting some puzzle pieces together and seeing which pens fit. "It wouldn't have anything to do with them would it?"
"They split up." Eben said simply. "The pack didn't have an alpha to take over. Neither the alpha or beta had children." I had no clue if that was bad or not. From everyone's reactions, it seemed like a devastating thing to happen. I was told that packs were like a family. I didn't know if splitting up would be similar to a family splitting up.
"They didn't?" Emi questioned with furrowed brows. "Do you know who his beta was?" I leant back and crossed my arms. I was rather frustrated that I didn't understand a lot. "We know Travis, but pack things are kind of hush hush."
"His name was Finlay." Ralph raised an eyebrow. There was a clear reaction from my two friends as they heard the name. They looked towards each other and started to mutter things which I can't hear. "Does the name sound familiar to you?" Karim cleared his throat nervously.
"Yeah." He said towards Ralph. "That was my father's name. Though surely there must be another Finlay?" The room was silent. There were stares all around but not a word was spoken.
"There must be." Elowen tried to seem optimistic. "It's a common name but I doubt there would be two in the same pack." Her words were slow. It was as though she didn't want to startle anyone.
"I don't really know what to tell you." Lathen said slowly. "The pack split up because there wasn't going to be a new alpha who could replace Travis." He furrowed his eyebrows. "We didn't really keep track of everything. We weren't directly involved with Travis' pack."
Randall turned towards his brother. "You think Liam has something to do with this?" Ralph shrugged with a look of contemplation on his face.
"He'd definitely know something." Beaumont stated confidently. "I thought that you went to see him not too long ago? He didn't say anything?" Aiden spoke up for the first time in a while, startling me.
"He seemed understanding of Travis." The words were slow and careful, I couldn't blame him. I was keeping quiet because I didn't really have a clue about any of this. "He seemed to know more then he let on." The werewolves seemed unsure.
"Do you guys often..." I trailed off slightly, trying to word it in a way which woudln't seem insulting. "Just listen and accept what people tell you?" Some of them furrowed their eyebrows, Elowen nodded whilst looking a bit ashamed and others looked conflicted.
"There's not usually any reason to lie." Rhodes admitted. "We're all family here and we often have the same goals as other packs." Her point was valid but something still struck me as strange.
"Yeah, even then they still lie to you." Karim's voice was filled with anger. I wanted to comfort him and I wanted to understand why he was upset. We still didn't know each other that well, I just couldn't stand anyone being upset. I may be a little socially awkward but I wanted to at least try to help him.
"We should make another meeting with Liam." Ralph declared, even though his confidence wavered a little bit. "He might tell us more about Travis. He might know about your father as well." He had turned towards Karim as he said the last bit.
"I'll ask my parents-" Karim swiftly turned to Emi and shook his head.
"No, that's not a good idea." He sounded a little desperate. "We don't want them to know that we're involved in this pack." He reasoned. "I'll try and get some information tonight, if I can."
"School still exists." Aiden looked towards me. I sighed and shrunk down slightly. "We'll have to figure something out."
"Dad's still at the hospital. They're not going to try and find me if we explain what happened." Despite my reasons, Aiden would have none of it. I'd be going to school tomorrow no matter what. At least I had Emi to keep me company.
The day went smoothly from there. There was tension in the air, a feeling like something could happen at any moment but nothing did. Aiden and I were taken to the hospital to check up on mam, nothing had changed. We couldn't do anything until we got the information that we needed.
