𝐈𝐓𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐄𝐓.
So quiet that each of them could hear the steady beating of their hearts pounding through their chest, the hard swallow of saliva pushed down their throats; the soft tappings of Elijah's finger against his knee, Rebekah's teeth biting her bottom lip red, Deena clenching both her hands tightly in between her thighs before tugging on her T-shirt. Well, it was Hayley's shirt, but it was too comfy to give back.
It was awkward.
The three of them sat at the rectangular table cluttered in food more than Deena could handle; bagels, crispy bacon, a big bowl of oranges, hash browns, pancakes, and more of which Deena has mentioned to Rebekah once.
Yet, no one ate despite Deena still hungry since she didn't finish her plate back in the Bayou.
Rebekah broke the silence first. "This looks tasty! Compliments to the chef. Would you like some, Deena?" She grabbed the orange her aunt offered but made no attempt to peel it. "Here, let me peel it for you then." She took the orange from her hand and began peeling it.
Elijah called this meeting to discuss a topic needed to be talked about, but they have been sitting here for close to an hour and no one has yet said a word. This was making Deena even more anxious about their decision being set on throwing her out.
"Are we waiting for someone?" Deena asked, nervously.
Rebekah peeled the orange with speed and placed it on the empty plate, waiting for her niece to eat. She knew she wasn't going anywhere until she ate something, so she broke the orange in half, peeled a small piece, then plopped it into her mouth. Rebekah backed off.
"We are waiting for your father." Elijah responded while checking his watch. "Being on time has never been his best element. I'm sure he will make quite the entrance."
Don't fight it, Deena.
Deena almost choked on her peeled orange when hearing she was officially going to meet her father face-to-face and not through a picture that was years old. But it was strange because though she remembered flashes of his face, she won't be blinded by the pain of her bones breaking and the faces she saw and the voices she heard would make sense. This will be her first real official meeting with her father.
