Tesa let out a sigh of relief once Phil and Jace had left. She didn't particularly want Phil to leave, but Jace was starting to be a problem.
Jace was always a problem, wasn't he.
Tesa glanced at Dan before saying: "So what happened?"
Dan opened one eye. "How'd you know I wasn't sleeping?" He asked quietly.
"Please. You're eyes opened when Jace and I were fighting." She paused, tucking her hair behind her ears. "Now, what flashback was it? The storm, the field, or the school?"
Dan had always had flashbacks, ever since Sian had left. And he'd always told Tesa about them.
That's part of the reason Jace hates me so much, Tesa thought.
As time passed they'd discovered a pattern between the flashbacks. It was always the same three — storm, field, school. The problem was, they couldn't find a connection between any of them.
"So which one was it?"
"Storm." Dan said, his voice full of dread.
"Ah... " The storm was always the worst flashback for Dan. And it didn't help that Jace remembered none of it. Or that he fucking kissed Dan.
Dan sighed. "It was really strange — this time it was the full flashback, not just snippets like I'm used too." He paused, "I think I've told you about this before, but the only time I've ever had the full flashbacks of the storm, field and school was when I first started having flashbacks."
Tesa looked at Dan, her fingers playing with her necklace. "Yeah, you've told me. And it's just so weird... We can't seem to find a connection to any of them, except that they all happened after Sian..." she cleared her throat, "After Sian left."
Dan turned his head and looked out the window, staring at something in the distance.
Silence filled the room, both lost in their own thoughts. A breeze swept through the room, ruffling Tesa's short hair. She brushed it back.
Maybe... maybe it had something to do with Phil. That's the only new thing I can think of... what else could have triggered it? she thought.
Tesa was about to ask Dan what he and Phil had been doing when Dan suddenly burst out laughing.
She jumped about a foot in the air, startled. "What? What is it?"
Dan was cracking up. He managed to point out the window before falling the the floor with a thud, still laughing.
Tesa threw Dan a confused look before striding over to the window and peering out. By the edge of the willow were Jace and Phil... though Jace was pinned down by Ivory and Phil, looking horrified, was struggling to pull Ivory off.
"What absolute losers! Everyone knows that Ivory is only fed in the water... Don't they?" Tesa laughed.
God damn, Jace is always like this, she thought fondly. Or at least... He used to be.
Dan sat up and smiled at her. "Everyone except for Jace, apparently! This is great! We'll get to tease Jace forever about being pinned down by a swan!"
"You were just half and hour ago." She pointed out.
"... Right." Dan said. "Let's just go."
