Dan's POV
"Jace?" Tesa called out. "Come down here! We have a guest!"
Dan looked up from where he was sitting with a start.
Jace? What was he doing here?
Dan glanced over at Phil, who was doing a semi-glare up the tree.
Adorable, Dan thought. He mentally smacked himself. I can't like two guys at the same time! I mean, I've always had a crush on Jace!
Jace poked his head out of his window. He pushed his brown hair out of his eyes.
"A guest? I'll be down in a second." Jace replied with little excitement.
Dan watched him climb out if his window. Refusing to go down the ladder he'd built yet again.
Typical Jace, Dan thought.
Dan saw Tesa go and whisper something to Phil. Phil's eyes widened.
"He made all of this?" He said in awe.
"That's right! He's quite the handy man, mind you," she smiled, but it was tinged with sadness.
All of a sudden Jace dropped down from the tree, right infront of Dan.
"Boo," he said with a smirk.
With Jace standing infront of him Dan felt all his old feelings rush back.
Stop! Dan told himself. I thought I was over him by now! He likes Madeline.
His heart twanged sadly at Madeline's name.
It used to do that with -- Enough. Dan thought. I'm not thinking about that anymore.
Jace ran his fingers through his tousled light brown hair. His brown eyes sparkled with mischief.
"Been a while, danosaur. Kinda missed you, kid." Jace said playfully, ruffling Dan's hair.
Dan blushed at the use of his nickname. He was sure he was bright red when Jace tousled his hair.
"M-missed you too, Jace," Dan stuttered. He wished he had enough willpower to withstand Jace's charm.
Kylie seemed to be the only one that was able to.
Jace's attention drifted over to Phil. His eyes got that cruel light in them. Dan knew he was going to go over and make fun of Phil. His Phil.
His Phil? Where did that thought come from?
"Who's this?" Jace asked.
Dan glanced at him. "Phil. He's my friend, Jace." Jace shrugged. "Kylie's too."
At the mention of Kylie's name, the teasing light went out of Jace's eyes. He knew not to mess with Kylie.
No one messed with Kylie. Kylie was the one who founded this whole group. She'd found Dan in the library one afternoon, and sat next to him without a second glance.
Somehow, she got Dan talking. It might have been her quiet nature, the way she didn't push him to tell her everything about himself.
"Where is Kyles anyway?" Jace asked, using Kylie's nickname.
Dan glanced at his phone.
"She had to go home after practice." He told Jace, trying not stammer.
"Eh. At least that means I can blast my music."
Another thing Kylie wouldn't approve of-- Jace's music. Kylie liked edm music, Tesa and Dan drifted more towards Muse, and Sian... Well, Sian... Dan stopped himself.
Dan ran his hand through his hair. "Yeah, go right ahead."
"Let me go and talk to... What's his name?" Jace questioned.
"P-Phil." Dan felt a sudden rush when he said Phil's name, like it was forbidden candy on his tongue.
"Phil. I'll have to think of a nickname for him, too." Jace threw Dan one last smirk before he walked over to Phil.
Tesa had taken Phil to the bookshelf Jace had made her, and was showing him her magna collection.
Phil looked quite happy and impressed by all she had.
Phil was looking at a book, his hair falling across his face. His lips moved softly, mouthing the words as he read them. All Dan could think about then was kissing him.
Phil suddenly looked up. Not at Jace, who was nearly in front of him, but at Dan.
Blue eyes met brown.
Phil looked at him again. Dan never had anyone look at him like that. Really look at him.
It was a nice feeling.
"So, your Phil?" Jace smirked.
Here we go again, Dan thought grimly.
