If you're going to be honest? You barely got any sleep last night. You stayed up trying not to disturb James's peace or the duo that cuddled into you for more warmth. As a result, when you got up this morning the tiredness and pain in your body hit you like a ton of bricks.
James walks up to a bridge. You and Clementine follow not too far after him and you have AJ held up in your arms while Clementine holds your bag again. Milo sits comfortably inside and you cooed adorably at the two when you first saw it, much to her embarrassment.
But now the mood is off again. Especially with AJ's cries and groans in pain, there's no way you could spend the morning being anything but worried.
"Is he awake?" James whispers as you walk up.
"Yeah. He's so hot," you murmur worriedly. Clementine steps up to him and places a hand on his forehead, her eyes widening when she feels him burning up. You watch her worried gaze flicker up to you and you just sigh sadly.
"I can carry him. You're exhausted," James offers.
You shake your head stubbornly. "It's fine. I got him."
James starts walking again and you and Clementine follow him.
"Hurts," AJ says weakly. Weaker than last night, weaker than you've ever heard him.
"Hang on, we're almost there, kid," you murmur comfortingly, dragging your feet slowly as you follow James. You finally reach the gates and you can feel yourself shaking but you force yourself to keep AJ tight in your grasp.
"Walker!" Willy yells from above the gates. He shoots his arrow at James and it lands at his feet.
"Violet! Louis! They came back!" Willy yells with widened eyes, running out of sight.
"Look, you live out there alone, right? You could stay here with us," Clementine offered James.
He glances at her, you, AJ, then the arrow near his feet, "Not ready."
He walks away.
"I can't-" you stumble forward, trying not to topple over from exhaustion. "I can't keep carrying him. We'll be inside soon. Rest," you force out.
Louis walks up to the gates but you don't notice as your vision spins slightly. You finally give in to your exhaustion and fall to your knees, not daring to let AJ go from your arms. Clementine rushes to your side and puts a comforting hand on your shoulder as she kneels down.
You hear the gates groan as they open.
"Shit, are they-" Louis starts nervously.
"They're alive. AJ was shot. He's got a fever." Clementine cuts him off.
"Come on, let's get inside," he says.
Clementine shakes her head. "She- she can't. I'm not leaving either of them out here."
Louis sighs and picks AJ up out of your arms. Clementine helps you onto your feet and you lean onto her as she takes you inside.

You walk into the main building with them and you see Violet, Ruby, and Willy waiting for you all. Ruby steps up first and gets a look at AJ's wounds.
"I have what I need upstairs. Come on," she says.
Willy runs upstairs and Ruby and Violet move out of the way so Louis can walk up the stairs. You catch Violet looking at you worriedly yet she doesn't say anything as Clementine starts walking forward with you again.
"James helped us get the shrapnel out of him," Clementine speaks up.
"James?" Ruby asks curiously.
"Long story," you whisper tiredly.
