Chapter 22 ; Are You Ever Really Prepared?

You, AJ, and Clementine step into the front yard, both of you on either side of him. You smile at the hard work you've done over the past few weeks, barricades, barbed wire on the linings of the outside walls, even the gate was boarded up (even though you actually had to do most of that and it was tiring).

AJ yawns, making you yawn too. 

"You ready to work today, kiddo?" Clementine asks.

"Bad dreams always make me more tired," he grumbles.

"Me too," you say.

"I slept better in your bed," he says, making Clem smile. Though you'd never admit it, you did too. You were the first to wake up as usual, so you snuck out of bed and got ready for the day, feeling more refreshed than you have in years.

"It's my turn to be lookout," AJ says.

Suddenly Tenn appears from the top of the wall, and he gives AJ a wave, AJ grins and rushes over, leaving just you and her. You both glance over at each other at the same moment, making big grins come onto your faces.

"So-"

"I-"

You both chuckle as you both start speaking at the same time. "Jinx," you murmur with a childish grin. Clementine laughs and you replay sound in your head for a few moments, noticing the way your heart flutters every time.

"You go first," she says, shaking her head with the same grin that makes your head spin.

"I was gonna say I'm sorry about last night. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable or-"

Clementine cuts you off with a laugh she couldn't contain, making you tilt your head in confusion. "It's fine, Y/n. I promise."

That makes you smile, though before you can tease her about it or say anything else, the sound of Violet and Louis interrupts you. You turn your head slightly to look at them and quickly realize they're arguing.

"I have other stuff I need to do." You hear Louis say as you and Clementine walk up.

"What stuff?" Vi asks, crossing her arms.

"Nothing- It's just... it's important."

"Goddammit, Louis, take this seriously, for once in your life!"

"I've been taking this seriously for fucking days! Almost two weeks!" he says, his voice rising.

"So has everyone. Get over yourself!" she grits out, her nose scrunching in anger.

He looks at the ground, disappointment flashing on his features for a moment then starts walking away. He walks past you and Clementine with a glance but before either of you can say anything he keeps walking.

Violet walks up to you both. "Hey."

"I honestly thought Lilly and Abel would show up days ago, it's a little worrying to think what they're doing now instead," you say and Clementine nods.

"Don't know, couldn't tell you. All I wanted was more time to prepare, but now, all this waiting sucks. Everyone's on edge," she mutters, crossing her arms.

"Need our help?" Clementine asks.

"Yeah, actually. Could you guys check on everyone and make sure they're doing shit right?"

"You can count on us," you say with a salute, watching the way the corners of her lips pull up at your antics. Her face drops after a moment when she looks at Louis across the way, shooting at some targets for practice.
