Author's Note: I am so sorry for the late posting of this chapter. Yesterday was a crazy day and I had no time to sit down at my laptop and post this. But it is here at last! Enjoy!
It had been exactly forty-eight hours and Jake Webber glanced up at the doorway to the master bedroom belonging to Colby and Sam. None of them had seen their fearless leaders since they came back from their attack on the Team 10 House. While Jake understood that the two needed their space and Jake couldn't imagine what Colby had gone through without having his mate there, Jake was also worried about how this appeared to their whole pack.
The choices Colby made that night at the Team 10 House concerned Jake in multiple ways:
First, Colby choosing to go after Sam was completely understandable, as Jake would choose Tara in a heartbeat. But, Jake felt that Colby could have sent some of the pack to Xepher and Amber's need. Now, they were trying to look for their newest pack members instead of celebrating at home. It sent a sour taste in Jake's mouth as to Colby's abilities to protect all of them.
Second, Colby deliberately killed someone... fucking killed someone! Jake couldn't wrap his head around the bodies in the yard. He knew Sam had killed the other Alpha and, in some way in Jake's head, that was forgivable. Sam was about to be raped and Jake understood Sam killing the Alpha who dared to touch him nonconsensually. But, Colby? Jake knew his brother-from-another-mother since their Kansas days in Vine. Colby was never the type of person to kill someone, and Jake literally saw the Alpha drown another in a pool. Granted, Colby was just about to watch his mate get raped, but Jake still couldn't fathom how much anger it caused Colby to do such a thing.
Third, Jake couldn't stop thinking about how their pack injured the Team 10 pack so much. Jake literally had pushed someone out the window without a second thought. He hadn't felt that blood thirsty since their early months at the original Trap House when they were first bit. After hurting Tara, Jake swore to never feel that way again. But, last night, he followed direct orders from his Alpha and didn't have a second thought about injuring another pack.
Fourth, that night had left the Trap House pack in a liminal space. Jake watched Colby's absence carefully and knew that something needed to be done. They were bigger than just the Trap House. They were the Trap House Pack.
Jake turned to Tara curled up beside him, reaching over to run his fingers through her hair. She smiled, shutting her eyes, and leaning into him on their shared bed, "I think we should call Nate."
"Why?" she creaked an eye open, stretching her aching limbs.
"To talk with Sam and Colby," Jake swallowed, "They haven't stepped out of their room once."
Tara frowned at her mate, "Sam's in a very dangerous Heat, Jake. I don't blame Colby for keeping themselves locked up. He almost took a bite out of me when I knocked on their door the other night."
A low growl tickled the back of Jake's throat, he pulled Tara closer to him, "I'm aware, but this can't keep going on like this. Too much has happened for Colby to just disappear with Sam. What about Xepher and Amber?"
Tara sighed, "I know," she soothed her mate, "Elton and Corey are up at the cabin right now to look at the damage and see if there are any signs of the hunters tracks. We must stay together-- we'll call Nate tomorrow."
Jake nodded, "Okay," burying his nose in his mate's hair.
"Let's get some sleep," Tara groaned, threading her fingers through Jake's hair, rubbing herself up against her mate, "You need to stop thinking so hard, baby."
