DANIELA CRUZ walked into the classroom, alongside her roommate Bru, with her textbooks in her arms. She looked over and saw Tariq who was already sitting in his usual seat. She never thought she'd see the day where he'd be early to class.
"Well, look who's on time for once! Ha! Making the rest of us look bad." Brushandia remarked, loudly. "Yeah, Tariq. What are you doing here so early?" Lauren asked, plopping down in the chair beside him. "I'm tryna catch up." Tariq answered.
"Shit, nigga. It's gone take more than a day to do that." Daniela uttered, sitting down with Bru. "Well you did the reading, right?" Tariq queried. "Yes sir. I sure did." Daniela replied. "What side are you on?" Tariq asked, leaning forward.
"What did you say, Tariq?" Professor Milgram spoke up, catching everyone's attention.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I was just asking Daniela about the assignment." Tariq apologized.
"No, I'm glad to start the debate. So, what about it? Locke believed that people were fundamentally just. Would you agree?" Professor Milgram queried.
"He tripping. One trip to the hood, and you can tell that Hobbes is right. People are just out for themselves." Brushandria said.
"And Lauren, would you agree with that?" Professor Milgram asked.
"Well I'd like to think that Locke has a point, but I actually think we construct our own societies and rules to keep ourselves from our fundamental nature." Lauren argued.
"Which is?" Professor Milgram asked.
"Well some people are better than others, but everybody's just out for themselves." Lauren continued.
"That's not true. People help each other all the time. Like, what about that scene in The Dark Knight where the two boats, inmates and citizens, don't blow each other up?" Ashley inquired.
"That's a movie." Daniela said.
"We're taught that murder is wrong. We're taught that. It's not natural. Locke is clear about the division between right and wrong. Society has rules, and we all know them. Every society, every person. Even little kids." Ashley defended her argument.
"That's a hundred percent cap." Brushandria protested.
"Cap." Lauren agreed with Bru, before clearing her throat.
"I mean I agree." Lauren corrected herself, making Daniela scoff quietly.
"Professor Milgram, you know what I mean. There's a bright line between good and evil, right and wrong, and we know that, because, we, as humans are fundamentally and naturally good." Ashley voiced.
