. . .
I tossed and turned in the sheets of the four poster bed that I had been sleeping in for the past few weeks. The bed wasn't mine, but it was better than nothing. The skeletons who lived in this castle were kind enough to let me stay. No. Kind is the wrong word. They were merely tolerant to my existence. My world was erased, and I was found by one by the name of Dust. He seemed prepared to kill me in a single swipe, but he stopped mid swing and ended up taking me with him instead.
The others were awful violent to me when I first arrived, but Dust protected me. I wasn't quite sure why, but it didn't really matter in the end. At least I was alive.
I flopped onto my back and stared up at the fabric draped over the top of my bed. I'd been at this for a few hours now. Everyday since I first arrived here I'd had nightmares about losing my home. Most nights I woke up with tears running down my cheeks. The only way to avoid these vivid illusions was to not fall asleep at all. That task proved to be quite difficult after two all-nighters.
I sat up from the pillow and lifted myself out from the confines of the heavy blanket. The bed was so huge that I had to crawl across it to get out. I fumbled with the fabric, trying to find the break in the canopy. When I finally did, I slipped out of the bed.
My feet found the slippers left at the side of the bed, and I silently shuffled across the room. I fought a yawn and checked the wall clock for the time. It took me a few seconds to figure it out due to my lack of sleep. 3:00am. I read in my head. I sighed dramatically and rubbed at my tired eyes. One thought alone crossed my mind to help me stay awake. Tea. Pu-erh Tea. I recalled my mother making it for me when I had to stay up for some reason or another.
I opened my door as quietly as I could and wandered down the stairs. I kept my footsteps light so that I didn't wake the others. I'd rather not have found out how they would respond to being woken up in the middle of the night.
After quite a bit of aimless roaming, I found my way to the kitchen. It was in complete and utter disarray. Bags of flour and sugar were over turned. Smashed eggs were lying on the counter, disturbingly not dripping. I don't think I want to know how long those have been there.
I tried to step over the puddles of unknown substances, but it was too much. I swiftly and silently left the room only to return with a mop, a face mask, and other necessary cleaning supplies. I tied my hair up with the elastic that was left on my wrist from the day before. Once the mask was secured around my lower face, I got to work.
Occasionally, I reached a creak in the floor or some other form of noise and panicked. I paused for quite a while before returning to my work. After most of the heavy cleaning was complete, I polished the counters and organized what was left of the ingredients. As I worked away at a specifically stubborn stain, I thought to myself. I wanted tea, but this works too.
When I checked the clock for a second time, it read 4:08am. My eyes narrowed, and I adjusted the tilt of the clock ever so slightly. "There." I whispered to myself, proud that it was now straight. I turned to observe my work and smiled, satisfied with its cleanliness.
"Is this what you humans do in the middle of the night? If not, you give your people a bad name."
I jumped at the gruff voice that came from the entrance of the kitchen behind me. He spoke in a condescending manner, yet still gave the impression that he didn't care about my response. Only one skeleton in this castle spoke in such a way. Nightmare.
I swallowed with a bit of difficulty and turned to face him. I tilted my head only slightly to meet his eye light. He was not incredibly tall, but I was not one to talk. His piercing gaze was rather uncomfortable, but the color of his eye light was so mesmerizing that I couldn't look away. It seemed that I didn't have to though because he averted his eye light first.
