The years passed so slowly it seemed, more kids would show up at the orphanage. Dabi grew older, yet more comfortable with his and Shiggy's situation. Knowing that this was a safe permanent place to stay was a good feeling. And the little kitsune was slowly opening up to him eventually she finally began talking to him and everyone else. Even through the slight rough patches the orphanage had nothing truly changed.
She still wouldn't talk about what brought her here, she'd just curl up and shut down again. But this was enough for Dabi. Being able to talk to her was nice. The two had become close. Almost inseparable, Aizawa watched on, smiling softly seeing Dabi helping someone. But he could see the other emotions Dabi was showing towards the young girl.
It turned out that Kyubey was a really sweet girl, putting others before herself. Even after all that she had been through, but still too afraid to go out into the open world. So Aizawa home schooled Kyubey while the others went to public school. Dabi didn't like it much. And Shiggy barely went to the point where Aizawa just decided to home school him as well. That was until he sent him back to a public high school.
Dabi even had a routine. He'd be the first running home, greeting Kyubey with a warm smile or even a hug. And this routine didn't change. Not even when they both grew older.
Today was Kyubey's 16th birthday. It was after school and Dabi wondered the convenience store, trying desperately to buy her something. Not really knowing exactly what she'd like. He groaned slightly in irritation. Now wondering if he should buy some snacks and watch a few horror movies before he'd take her trick or treating, or do something more. Her birthday was on Halloween, one of the best holidays ever.
"How many times are you going to wonder down this aisle looking for something?" Shiggy asked as he glanced up from his phone.
"I just want her to have something nice..hmm. Let's go to the jewelry store next door." he finally decided, ignoring the young woman at the counter who had been trying to get his attention for the longest. Shiggy snorted but followed after his friend and brother, almost feeling bad for the cashier, almost.
The two entered the jewelry store and he watched as Dabi looked around, his eyes wondering between the necklaces and the rings.
"What do you think she'd like more?" he muttered faintly, his eyes wondering to a silver necklace with a silver pendant that held a deep red ruby in the shape of a heart. At the end of it was a black key, the top shaped like a skull and the end of the key forming an "I love you".
"Whatever you get her will be nice. She likes anything you give her." rasped Shiggy in his scratchy voice and Dabi bit his lip, playing with the black ring there before reaching forward, the rings on his fingers glittering slightly.
He thought the necklace would match anything she wore and it was a heart...so it was automatically romantic. And girls liked that stuff..right?
Romantic?
His face felt hot and he ignored his thoughts as he picked up the necklace carefully, approaching the woman at the counter. "Can I get this in a box? With a bow?" he said and the lady nodded with a small smile. "Of course. What's the occasion?" she asked and Dabi shrugged.
"My best friend's birthday..I thought she'd like it." he said, sounding nervous and the woman gave him a knowing look. "I'm sure she'll love it. That'll be 250$." she said and was almost surprised when the teen brought out a black card. She swiped it and he typed in the pin, the price deducting off his card.
"Thank you and please come again. Also, have a nice Halloween." she said and he hummed in response.
"You're nervous for no reason." said Shiggy as the two left the shop and Dabi frowned. "I'm not nervous. It just has to be perfect. Since everyone's getting her presents. That chicken too." he muttered and Shiggy snickered. "True. But she'll like your present the most. She always does. Like the stuffed animals on her bed you got her for her last birthday. Or the blouse you got her. And the earrings-"
