Twen's POV

"Twen...I-I...I don't have the key."

My heart stops after hearing what Jamie said. What am I going to do now, how am I going to remove this cuff on my ankle? Will I ever be able to connect with my wolf?

My breathing quickens with this realization, but I think Jamie is taking it way worse than I am. He's walking side to side, breathing rapidly, muttering to himself, and insulting himself for losing it.

He suddenly stops pacing and turns to look at the water, knowing what he's going to do next I grab his arm with both my hands. He turns around to look at me when I stop him.

"Let go Twen, I can find it, it's somewhere in there."

"No, dark there."

"I-I know, but you won't be truly free until that thing is removed. You won't be able to recover part of yourself without that key."

I look down upon hearing his words staring at the cuff on my ankle. He's not wrong, but I can wait. I'm now realizing I don't really know what it feels like to lose half of myself anyways since I never had it to begin with. All my life I've been without a wolf, so I don't mind waiting a bit more.

I lift my head and smile at Jamie, I shake my head no and say, "I wait."

Jamie looks at me surprised. "A-Are you sure? Aren't you mad at me?"

His question makes me smile even more. What a silly question, I could never be mad at Jamie. "No mad, never mad." Jamie takes both of my hands into his and with a serious face he says, "I promise I will get that thing off of you, I'll make sure you meet your wolf soon."

I nod at his declaration and believe every word he said. Jamie lets go of one of my hands, keeping only one in his. He begins walking to the dense forest and before we enter, he turns to look at me.

"We're going to have to keep running, if you can't continue just let me know and I'll carry you."

"Okay." I hope I can run farther this time; I don't want to burden Jamie even more.

With that, we run straight into the thick trees covered in fog. Not knowing where we are headed and without a destination.

Jamie's POV

How long are they going to chase us? They've caught up to us twice already ever since we left the waterfall. I was sure the mud would help mask our scents, but they keep getting close to us. I don't understand why they just won't let us go, why go through the trouble of hunting us down?

We've been running for ages, and we haven't run into any other wolves or human towns that can help us. We really are in the middle of nowhere.

We've been running the whole night and it looks like the sun will rise soon, the sky has changed from black to blue and I can't see the stars anymore. Once the sun has risen it'll be easier for them to find us, at night we can use the darkness, trees, rocks, and shrubs to hide easily behind. Although we can still do this during the day, they'll be able to spot us more easily because of the sunlight.

Twen has kept up with me very well, though I have had to carry him a few times, not that I mind. I can tell that he's exhausted but he insists on running on his own. I honestly don't know how we've both not collapsed at this point, we shouldn't be able to move at all. I think the thought of being caught again is what's keeping us going, that, and the adrenaline of escaping is still fresh on our minds.

The snap of what sounds like a twig catches my attention, I whip my head in the direction of the noise and try to see what made it while running. Just then one of Michaels' rogues jumps out of the thick trees and skids in front of us. We skid to a stop making sure there was quite a bit of distance between us and the rogue.
