Alex was sat across from me and leaning back in his seat, his caramel hair pushed against the red velvet fabric. His smile was gleaming brightly even in the dim yellow lighting. He was talking to James about the pizza they never got to eat (seriously RIP that pizza) and they looked so happy, almost hysterical. As my eyes adjusted, I felt the fantasy glass screen crack and fall away. There was no screen between us now. I had to say something... It must've been obvious how much I was staring. Again.
"Hello? Callie, is it? Are you okay?" Still a little short on breath from laughter, the boy of my dreams addressed me and I jumped a little in my seat. All those flashbacks were making it hard for me to process what was happening in front of me right now.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," I managed to say with a small smile and pretended to gulp down any remaining drops in my shot glass.
"Oh, my bad. Nice to meet you fine, I'm Alex," he chuckled to himself and James elbowed him pretty hard, the two of them clearly still cracked up over some joke I missed during the pizza conversation. "No no really, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to tell such a terrible joke. You seem like you want more drink, the next one's on me," he winked and stood up before I could object.
Then he spoke up louder, "Everyone, next round's on me, 'aight?" and began running off to the bar. Caught up in watching his black jeans ripple around his knees and ankles whilst listening to coins clink clink clink in his pocket, I was abruptly startled by a very loud voice that interrupted my anxious vs admiring staring.
Slam. "Alright lads! What's goin' on 'ere?" At the end of the sentence, the enthused voice went particularly high. His hands were broad with a few silver rings on some fingers. Placed palm down on the cleaner-than-the-party bar but still-not-so-clean table, he knocked over my empty shot glass. It rolled off the table, but I just let it go. Just then, as if by clockwork, Alex returned scarily fast, carrying the next tray of drinks.
"Will!" Now Alex's voice leapt up to the ceiling and he almost dropped the drink tray to pat Will super hard on the back. I steadied the black plastic tray of drinks with my hand, pushing it safely into the center of the table and James shot me a look. The kind of oh shit that was close, but thanks for that –look and nodded his head in approval, reaching for the tray.
Although, James did seem the most drunk of all of us – so I'm not sure if he was one to judge – and yes, he went straight for 2 of the drinks. Nadia then also willingly gave him hers. Tentatively James tried to offer it back and then nodded again in approval before chucking it back during their silent exchange.
The gatecrasher was no one other than Will Lenny (known to the internet as WillNE). Of course I knew who he was and I shouldn't have been surprised to see him rock up here... but I had to pretend I didn't know who he was, at least for now.
Will proceeded to go round patting everyone that he could feasibly reach on the back, then went to shake Nadia's hand and reach out for mine - which I gave him without thinking. His hands, especially his rings were cold from being outside and it woke me up a little.
"Will e'rybody, nice to meet yous!" He reached behind his denim jacket with one hand to readjust his collar and tried to squish on the end next to me. Alex just burst out laughing.
"Oh, come on mannnnn!" Alex flipped his hair a bit to the side and side-eye stared at the predicament of Will squished up next to me on the end of the seat.
Will retorted by staring back at Alex laughing, then blurted out, "What?!"
"You come 'ere, alright," Alex gulped up a good portion of his drink through his straw and placed one down in front of me, "LATE... may I add, Will you are fucking late!" By his words Alex should have sounded pissed – yet he sounded anything but and was grinning broadly. Even though I couldn't understand that aspect of his relationship with the other eboys (his mates) - I loved it. I was here for it.
"And then, thennn, you have the fucking nerve to get all cosy here with my girl Callie?!"
By this point, Will had left my side and was standing over by Alex. They were playfully pushing each other.
My drink was a kind of purple-pink colour and had an inviting black straw (which matched Alex's), so I drank some just to try and calm my brain if anything.
Wait, did I just miss something? Did Alex just call me his girl?
"Will, you almost just fucking spilled my drink all down me!" Alex pushed Will back hard and took a long, hard sip, the last dregs of alcohol gurgling their way up the plastic tube.
