Only You

"SHIT! Where's he gone?" James suddenly stopped admiring all the brightly-coloured flashing machines and ran a hand through his thick black hair. The few pound coins he was holding onto clattered to the carpeted floor littered with chewing gum.

"What, Alex? He was 'ere a minute ago..." Will poked his head around the corner towards the reception desk and sighed, "I wouldn't worry too much, he'll find us."

But I was worrying alright. Even more than James.

Watching Will pick the coins off the disgusting floor and sighing again at James who was staring, unseeing into the distance as if he was trying to trace Alex's location in his head - gave me the urge. Urge to run.

"Okay, maybe she's got a point. It is Alex..." Will's voice trailed off.

"Callie, wait!"

As I legged it up the neon lit-up escalator, I could hear Fraser's voice out of breath, calling out behind me. But it was too late, I wasn't waiting for anyone.

The second my Demonia boots hit the pavement, I knew I'd made a mistake. It was fucking raining. Just my luck.

My dark brown hair was sticking to my face, droplets trickled down my forehead and my mascara was most definitely smudged from a mixture of crying, sweat and sky-tears. By the time I caught sight of him, I was so exhausted it felt like a mirage. Yet my heart skipped a beat at the sight of that sparkly Gucci sweater and brown hair, also soaked through, raindrops sliding off the back and pooling on his hood.

"Alex!!" I yelled out into the rain as I dashed across the road, risking getting run over just to be by his side a second sooner. A man yelled out expletives from the window of his Mercedes as he zoomed off into the night, never to be seen again. At least I didn't care.

"Alex, Alex, you're okay! Oh my god, thank God. I was so worried about you," I panted, rubbing his soaking wet hoodie sleeves up and down in an attempt to warm him up. They just clung to his skin and Alex screwed up his face, clenching his teeth together.

"No!" he yelled, startling me, his fringe flicking water into my eyes. "I'm not okay. I'm not okay," he mumble cried into his tears, staring down at the pavement and the puddle he was standing in. So, I did the only thing I could, and I hugged him. As tight as I could, I hugged him through his cold, wet clothes. He was shaking.

"Callie," Alex started to say. "Callie," he tried again, parting his hair from his eyes. I waited patiently to listen, holding his cold hands.

"I'm here." I smiled, aware of how deranged and far from comforting I probably looked right now. My hair and makeup the biggest mess, but that didn't matter. Alex certainly didn't seem to care.

"You didn't even care! None of you did!"

"What? I did... I came to find you! James was really worried about you too! They-they all were," I stammered, starting to feel quite offended.

"Yeah, but you didn't even realise I was gone, did you?"

"I did! I came as quick as I could, how was I supposed to know where you went?! You didn't say anything!"

"Yeah, because you were so busy talking to George and Fraser. You completely forgot about me!" Alex's voice was high and at the point of breaking.

Guilt stabbed through my chest and I felt like I was suffocating on his words. Maybe he was right. Maybe I had forgotten about Alex for all of five minutes. Was that really a crime? But he was right... I shouldn't have let this happen. If someone let me just disappear off into the night, I'd feel betrayed and unwanted too.
