There was absolute silence for a minute before Mor exploded with laughter.
She was still roaring with laughter, wiping tears that had escaped her eyes. Rhysand looked more relaxed, a small smile on his face. Cassian had snorted so hard he was now trying to unblock his nose, while Amren sneered at her. But that sneer seemed oddly friendly. And there was Azriel too, gracing her with a hint of a smile.
It appeared as if Aelin could always find what to say, even in the direst of situations. That did not surprise her, of course, but small reminders that she was the Gods' gift to the world always put her in a good mood.
Mor had eventually stopped laughing and told her a tale of tragedy she called her life. What her family had done to her was grotesque, to say the least, and Aelin couldn't help thinking of different ways that Keir and Eris could potentially die from.
"If you want, I can kill them for you," The assassin spoke in all seriousness. "I'll charge you, of course. You might not be able to afford me though, my fees are quite expensive."
The princess did not expect the silence that followed her offer. She looked around the room to find Rhys's court looking at her in curiosity.
"I know I'm beautiful, but please stop with the stares, you're making me blush."
"What exactly do you do in the Human Realm?"
Ah, well that explained their perplexed expressions. "I never told you?" She sat upright and threw her hair behind her shoulder. "I'm a professional assassin back home. Quite infamous, actually."
Mor looked pleasantly surprised while Cassian snorted again.
Aelin looked at the general unimpressed. "I had you pinned down in half a second," She reminded him, "and you have the audacity to doubt me?"
The male stopped laughing at once.
Amren looked amused from her corner. "Are you any good?"
"How about you wake up the dead and find out?" She bit back.
Aelin looked over at Azriel wanting to know his thoughts. "It seems that we are more and more alike, Shadowboy,"
Azriel looked back at her, no hint of disgust could be found anywhere on his face. His piercing hazel eyes told her that he knew, that he understood, that he accepted her for it.
It was a strange feeling.
"Are you taking offers at the moment?" Their intense moment ceased as Rhysand jokes, pulling her back into the room and out of Ariel's gaze.
"Not from the likes of you," Aelin had no intentions of killing any Faes. Especially not now that she was in a different Realm. She was already in the middle of a war, the last thing she needed was one more enemy.
"I thank you for your offer, but when the time comes, I will be the one to end their lives." As she said it, the blond subconsciously circled her stomach, where the nails would be.
"Do you have scars?" Aelin asked, barely a whisper.
Morrigan's eyes looked distant as she answered. "They healed." She broke out of her trance and locked her brown eyes on Aelin. "And you, what about your scars?"
Aelin was silent for a moment. "Some scars never fully heal," She looked up and saw the Inner Circle looking intensely at her. To make things less gloomy she added; "But that's what you get when you start killing at such a tender age."
"What age did you..." Started Cassian, looking serious for the very first time.
"Had my first kill?" Aelin struggled her shoulders indifferently as she picked her nails. "Nine? Ten?"
When no one said a word, Aelin raised her eyes and saw that the Inner Circle was staring at her in shock.
