|Third|
"Isn't it nice that we get to eat dinner together tonight? Especially with how busy we both usually are, we barely have time for each other."
"Uh huh."
Thomas holds in a sigh and tries not to be slightly hurt at how his boyfriend stared at his phone. A zombie-like figure, glued to the glowing screen of one of the most technological advancements of humankind. Thomas knew that Alexander was doing work, staying updated constantly. His work surrounded his life. As if he didn't exist without it.
Thomas felt the weight of the ring in his pocket get heavier with every time Alexander taps on his phone screen.
"Alex—"
"Hi, how can I help you today? Anything to drink?"
"Oh um... Alex?"
Alexander doesn't bat an eye and stays staring at his phone. Thomas sighs and looks at the waitress. "I'll just have an iced tea, thank you," he says. "Alright. Are you ready to order food?"
Thomas glances at Alexander once and shakes his head. "No, not yet. Still deciding," he replies. "Okay, that'll be right up," the waitress says, before briskly walking away. Alexander stands up abruptly and Thomas furrows his eyebrows. "I gotta take this call," he says, not even waiting before walking away. Thomas rolls his eyes and gets up, following after his boyfriend.
He finds him standing outside on the phone. "Alex," Thomas says. Alexander puts his hand up. "Mhm. Yeah, just put it into the accounts and I'll deal with it tomorrow. Yup, okay," Alexander says to whoever he was talking to. He gets off the phone and goes right back to texting. Thomas sighs. "Lex..."
"Hm?"
"Let's go home."
"Oh. I thought you wanted to eat here. Did something happen?"
"It's just—"
Alexander nods, as if he's actually listening. Thomas glares at him. "Alex, can you please put your phone away while i'm talking to you?" he says. "Uh huh, almost done," Alexander responds.
"Alex."
"Hold on, Thomas. This is important. Just let me—"
"Alexander!"
Alexander freezes and for the first time that night, looks up at him. Thomas was slightly red with frustration. Alexander slowly lowers his phone and blinks. "Y— you never... yell..."
"Just, listen to me. God, put your phone down, please."
Alexander doesn't say anything and just watches Thomas run his hands through his hair. Alexander uncomfortably scratches at his wrists. "Alexander, I— to be entirely honest? I'm fed up of talking to basically a brick wall. You're so focused and neck deep into your work that you don't notice anything around you. You're so attached to your phone that you don't even see how upset I am. Do you even care anymore?"
"Thomas... I—"
"You have no idea what I even had planned for tonight. Instead of progressing in our relationship, i'm questioning if you even mean that you love me when you say it. You haven't said it to me in weeks, not to my face."
Alexander's eyes shoot to Thomas' hand reaching in his pocket. He pulls out a silver ring with an emerald in the center. Simple, yet beautiful. "At this point, i'm not even sure if you were going to say yes," Thomas says. Alexander's eyes fill with tears, but he quickly wipes them away.
"Thomas I'm— I don't know what to say I— I'm so sorry."
Thomas sighs and looks at the ring. "Would you have said yes?" he asks. Alexander blushes and looks at his feet. "Only if you would ask..." he mumbles. Thomas nods and gets down on one knee.
"Then I'm asking now. Alexander, I'm ready to commit to you all the way. I mean it. I don't want you to say yes unless you mean it too. If we're going to start a life together, it'd be better if it wasn't built off a lie. I love you, more than anything. And I want you more than anything."
"Thomas..."
Alexander doesn't say another word. Instead, he cups Thomas' face and kisses him. Thomas kisses him back and slowly gets up. Alexander holds onto his jacket as Thomas squeezes his waist. They pull away for air for a moment and Alexander cups his face again. "Yes, yes I will marry you, God, yes," he breathes out before kissing him again. Thomas smiles and hugs him while kissing him back. They separate once more, but stay in each other's arms.
"Thomas?"
"Yes, darlin'?"
"Let's go home. I can cook dinner tonight."
"Okay."
They pull away from each other and Thomas quickly grabs Alexander's hand. He watches as he slides the ring on his finger and smiles. "I love you..." he says, admiring it. Thomas wraps his arm around his waist. "Alex?"
"Yes?"
"I'm gonna fuck the life out of you when we get home."
"Good."
