"Happy birthday!", Flo wished me and hugged me. This morning we came home and went straight to Lando's family. Cisca had called and wanted us to come over. Lando had also told me that he would give me his present then.

"Thank you!" Everyone was indeed there and Cisca had even actually baked a cake. "Thank you so much. You are so wonderful," I thanked her for probably the hundredth time in the last few days. "It's no big deal," Cisca waved it off. "How did you know chocolate cake was my favourite?" The two sisters shrugged and Cisca said she didn't know either. "Well, it doesn't matter. But you guys are really great."

"Okay. Ready for the present?" asked Lando excitedly. He'd been really excited lately and kept looking at Flo. "Stop fidgeting! You're making me nervous!", I laughed uncertainly. I was really nervous just because Lando couldn't sit still. "You don't have to be nervous at all. Just come with me," Flo tried to reassure me and stood up. Lando and I did the same and ran outside. We walked to the stable, me grabbing Lando's hand on the way. "That bad?" he asked quietly. I nodded and bit my lower lip. We walked towards the stable. How was I supposed to feel there? "So Hailey. What have you always wanted to name a foal?" "Lacrima or Heartbreaker." "Do you think Lacrima goes with a black pinto?" I raised both eyebrows. "I think so. Why?" "Because a motherless foal was taken in by Animal Control and happened to be looking for a new home." "Ah. Wait. We talked about that, didn't we?" "It was Lando's idea." I looked up at Lando. "I thought because you lost Champ... So, that maybe you'd like to foster a new horse or something," he murmured softly. "You're serious? Flo? He's not serious is he?" She just grinned at me. "He did need some help getting the little mare over here and that too without you noticing, but there it is." We stood in the gate of the building. "Last stall on the right," was the last comment from Flo before I also hurried to get to the foal. Quietly I crept up to the box and peered over the door. The little one was lying asleep in the straw. "Awww. My God Lando," I whispered softly. My heart leapt for joy, but still ached at the sight. Lacrima had sores and was far too thin. "I'm so glad you got her," I murmured and silently opened the box. I hadn't heard Lando come in, nor Flo, but I knew they were both behind me. Quietly I crouched down in the straw and clicked. The foal's ears twitched. "Do you think I can call her Lacrima?", I turned to Flo questioningly. "Sure. Why not?" I nodded briefly and sat down right next to her. Carefully, I stroked her face. "Hey Lacrima," I whispered. Even at the touch she had her eyes wide open and was breathing in and out frantically with flared nostrils. "It's all right," I whispered gently and continued to stroke her. "I have another envelope for you, by the way," Lando remarked. I slowly rose again and left Lacrima. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed her relaxing again. Good. So closeness scared her.

Lando handed me the envelope, which I opened immediately. Out came two horse passports. I opened them. The first passport was probably Lacrima's, but the second was for a young stallion. Both had Lando's name on them. "What do you want with a stallion?" "You're a bit obtuse too, aren't you?" laughed Flo softly. "Huh?" "He's giving you another horse." My mouth dropped open. "Do you know how much I love you?" I asked breathlessly, hugging him tightly. Amazing. I couldn't believe it. How did I deserve him? He stroked me on the head. "I'll leave you two alone for a while," Flo more or less said goodbye and left. "Where's the stallion?" "I really never thought it would make you so happy. Much more I would have thought you would hate me then because I would have tried to replace your horse." I shook my head wildly. "No. You meant well. And oh damn." I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him.

"How did you find out about the horses," I asked. I was sitting next to Lando in the pasture where the chestnut stood alone. In the meantime, I had found out his name and age from the papers. His name was Shadow Dancer, he was four years old and a Holsteiner. He also came from the animal protection. "Flo told me that the association was overcrowded and that she would like to rescue horses. But she herself wouldn't have the time to look after them intensively... Well, and you lost Champ and I thought it would cheer you up... I honestly didn't think about it at all. But Flo thought it was a good idea too. Which it was." I closed my eyes. "You're amazing. But why those two exactly?" He shrugged. "Flo helped me, as I said. Besides, you told me at some point that you had known your horse since he was a foal. So I thought you'd have another foal and I couldn't leave him there alone. He reminded me of the horse in the pictures." "What pictures?" "The ones on your phone." I smiled. That's right. I had shown them to him once. "I honestly don't know what to say." "Then don't say anything." "Yes, but... I mean... you have two horses now." "That I gave you." "Yeah but on the papers and the cost." "Hailey. Calm down. They're our horses if that's what you want. And I don't care how we do this with the money. You're happy. Then I'm happy too." "Thanks. I still want to pay you back somehow." "How about a blow job?" I closed my eyes to keep from laughing. "Sometimes you're just stupid," I chuckled then. He had such a funny mix of adult and childish humour that I sometimes wondered what exactly had gone wrong....
