Garret rolled over. He rolled over again. He put his feet over his head. He put his feet back. He rolled over onto the cold part of the pillow but when his tail touched Damian's hair he thought it had touched a spider so he jumped up and glared at Damian fluffy hair.
Damian slept silently, and comfortably with an arm over Titan and the other over Jerry and Titus. Pennyworth was laying on Damian's chest and was enjoying the slow and steady up and down feeling.
How could they sleep so comfortably? Garret was struggling to sleep while they easily fell into it.
It was unfair.
He didn't like the idea of being the only one awake either.
Garret slid down the pillow to Titan's face where he frowned at him.
"You're not my favorite animal tonight." He grumbled.
Titan exhaled and Garret got a whiff of all sorts of things in his mouth.
"I'm never your favorite animal." Titan mumbled before he rolled over and turned his back to Garret.
Garret fumed with jealousy and jumped off the bed, scampering to the door that was cracked open. He squeezed himself through and started to walk.
The halls were dark and calm, perfect for a stroll.
Garret didn't want to sleep but he wasn't going to stay in the room staring at the other pets enjoying their sleep.
He found himself heading outside where a soft summer breeze blew softkt threw his fur.
The moon looked big and bright with a few stars dotting the sky.
"What are you doing out here?" a voice echoed.
Garret turned then saw huge reflective eyes staring at him.
"Agh!" Garret exclaimed as he jumped back.
The moonlight hit the dark figure and he saw Poison, Damian's pet raven that coincidentally Raven the hero found with him.
"Poison," Garret started as he calmed his racing heart "You shouldn't scare animals like that! You know, I have this heart thing going on"
She watched him carefully before she stretched out her wing to peck at it.
"You're rambling." She says calmly before her wing returned to her side. "I only asked what you are doing out here."
Garret frowned then scratched his ear with his paw.
"Couldn't sleep, Titan's maddening snoring kept me awake." He said.
It wasn't really true, it was more like, partially true. Titan does snore, but he didn't tonight. Garret just couldn't sleep.
Poison let out a sigh before she jumped off her perch near the door and put her long black feathy wings out. She soared over him and out into the yard.
Garret had nothing else to do so he ran after her.
Poison flew to the garden where she landed on a tree near the water fountain that was gurgling out water.
Garret looked around and asked "What are we doing here?"
"I didn't ask you to follow me" Poison said "So what are YOU doing here."
Garret frowned at her "I hate riddles."
He looked around the garden at the roses and flowers. The rose's appealing looks hid the spiky thorns that Titan had once jumped into. He was whimpering all day as Damian had to pluck each thorn out individually.
That day Garret had felt sorry for the dog. That was, until Titan got better and returned to his annoying habit of bothering Garret.
"I sit in the garden" Poison said "And I wait and watch."
"For what?" Garret asked as he turned.
"Something" She replied "Anything."her shiny eyes peered down at him "I am a night flyer."
"I thought ravens weren't nocturnal." Garret said doubtfully.
"Yes, but I belonged to a magical woman." Poison said as she soared down, landing on the rock pathway with a few clicks. "I'm not like other ravens"
Another breeze blew past them as Garret looked around.
He liked being outside at night. It was calming.
Tomorrow the dogs would be running around the yard, chasing Jerry or some other poor bird. They'd dig and jump then bark at every twig snap.
How calm a night walk can be."Garret." Poison said again.
Garret looked at her but found himself looking at his own reflection in her eyes.
"I think it's time you go to bed." She said softly before turning and flying away.
Garret watched as her wings painted the sky in black until he coukdnt see her anymore.
He turned then started his journey back into the house, down the hallway, and back into Damian's room.
He jumped on the bed and looked for a spot to sleep but it looked like all the pets were pushed close together.
Titan's eye opened when he saw a garret searching.
Without a word Titan moved a little so there was a space near Damian's neck and shoulder that was too small for Pennyworth to fit but just right for Garret to squeeze into.
And that is exactly what Garret did.
He climbed into the little spot, and laid down, his eyes finally tired.
He let out a heavy sigh and his eyes started to close.
He started to dream of night walks and gardens but most of all, ravens that flew into the moon.
