"Time to get up, Kenma."
"Yes, dad." Kenma spoke quietly, forcing himself to sit up in bed.
"Get cleaned up, breakfast is almost done."
"Okay."
Kenma sat for a few moments, struggling to keep his eyes open.
Stupid mornings, he thought, why do I have to wake up so early?
Eventually, Kenma found the strength to get himself out of bed. He walked to the bathroom. He looked at his reflection in the mirror, his hair was tangled and messy, and he was still covered in dirt. He lifted his arm to move his hair, pain from one of his cuts finally hitting him. He looked at the cut on his arm, covered in dried blood and dirt.
This is annoying.
He looked down, examining the cuts and scrapes on his knees.
This is Kuroo's fault.
After about half an hour, Kenma had cleaned out all the cuts and got a shower.
He walked downstairs, the smell of pancakes filling the air.
"Good morning, Kenma!" a familiar voice spoke loudly as Kenma entered the room.
Kenma quickly looked up, his eyes immediately finding the source of the voice.
Kuroo was sitting at the table, Kenma's mom placing a plate of pancakes in front of him.
"You're just in time, Kenma. Breakfast just got done. Come sit down before it gets cold." his mom spoke, putting pancakes onto another plate.
"I decided to come over again," Kuroo started, Kenma sitting next to him. "We can play video games after breakfast if you'd like."
Kenma felt some relief knowing that Kuroo wasn't going to make him play volleyball again. He was still tired from all that running around.
"Sure." Kenma spoke as his mom placed another plate of pancakes in front of him.
"You two seem to get along well." Kenma's dad spoke, sitting at the end of the table.
Kenma just nodded in response.
"I was teaching Kenma how to receive a volleyball yesterday!" Kuroo spoke excitedly.
"Oh, that sounds fun." Kenma's dad responded, smiling.
"I hated it." Kenma said before taking a bit of his pancakes.
"Oh really? Is that why you told me you had fun?" Kuroo spoke, gaining a glare from Kenma.
The rest of breakfast was fairly quiet, just a small conversations. Mainly about how Kuroo was doing with moving into a new home, and when he's going to start school. Soon after Kenma's dad was done eating, he got up, said goodbye, and left for work.
Kuroo waited until Kenma was finished eating, then he grabbed Kenma's hand and pulled him up the stairs and to his room.
"What game do you wanna play, Kenma?"
"I kinda just want to go back to bed."
"Oh come on! What about this one?" Kuroo asked, picking up a game that was sitting on Kenma's dresser.
"That's only one player." Kenma laid on his bed, covering himself with the blanket.
"Oh, what about- what are you doing?"
"Going back to sleep."
"Come on, Kenma." Kuroo grabbed the blanket and uncovered Kenma's face.
"Stop it, I'm tired."
"If you don't wanna play video games, we could always go play volleyball again."
"I just wanna go back to sleep. Where is your volleyball anyway? I don't remember seeing you pick it up before we left."
"I..." Kuroo thought for a moment, before suddenly yelling, "I forgot my volleyball!"
Kenma flinched at the sudden yell, but quickly closed his eyes and began trying to get the blanket from Kuroo's hand to cover his face back up.
"We have to go see if it's still there! Kenma, please!"
Kenma sighed, "Fine."
Kenma rolled out of his bed, balancing himself on his feet.
"Come on!" Kuroo once again grabbed Kenma's hand, pulling him down the stairs and out the front door, stopping to put their shoes on.
"This is tiring."
"That ball is important to me, hurry!"
"Important?"
The two boys ran down the street, Kuroo pulling Kenma's hand.
"Can we please just hurry?"
"Fine, fine."
Kenma wasn't sure what could be so important about a volleyball, but the worried look in Kuroo's face made his heart shatter. He wasn't sure, but he thought he had even seen Kuroo's eyes filled with tears.
They had arrived at the same spot that they were playing at yesterday. Both boys looked around, no sign of the ball anywhere. Kenma went over to the wall they sat on while watching the sunset. Nothing. He looked back to Kuroo, seeing the boy sitting on the ground, hugging his knees close to his chest.
Kenma felt his heart completely shatter into a million pieces when he seen tears falling down Kuroo's face.
Kenma ran as fast as his legs would take him until he reached Kuroo. He quickly hugged him as tightly as he possibly could.
"I'm so sorry." those were the only words Kenma could get out of his mouth. He wasn't sure what else he was supposed to say. He didn't know how to comfort people, and he wasn't even sure why that volleyball was so important to Kuroo.
The two of them sat there, neither one moving or speaking for almost an hour. Kenma's heart ached more each second that Kuroo cried.
