TW: Parents bullying child

Scene 12: Family Dinner 2 months Later

The scene opens up to Asher having dinner with his mom and dad.

Asher's Mom: 2 months out of high school already! How does it feel too really be out of school?

Asher: Eh. Exciting?

Asher's Dad: That's it? You're on the brink of beginning the rest of your life!

Asher: Yeah, Dad, it's exciting.

Asher's Mom: What's wrong cupcake?

Asher: I... I don't know. Guess I'm just nervous for the future.

Asher's Dad: You have nothing to worry about. You'll fit right in at college.

There is silence at the table

Asher's Mom: You finished all the forms that you need for Angelo State University, right?

More silence.

Asher: Mom, Dad... I'm not going to college.

Asher's Dad: You told us you got accepted in April. You told us that you planned to go to Angelo State University in September to study marketing. When did you just... decide not to do that?

Asher: I never applied to begin with. I said that so you would get off my case.

Asher's Dad: Get off your case?!? Asher, I can't believe you would lie to us like this. College is incredibly important, you need to get an education.

Asher: What I need to do is follow my dream.

Asher's Mom: Of being a musician? Ash, we've been over this. I love that you and Sam play music together, but you can't make a career out of it. You need to go to college.

Asher: I'm not going to college. I'm not going to waste my money on a piece of paper that will get me a dead end office job that I hate for the rest of my life.

Asher's Dad: So what are you going to do then? You seem to have everything figured out, what's your plan?

Asher: ... Sam and I are moving to L.A to pursue our band.

Outrage comes from his parents. These lines are one over another, right on top of each other

Asher's Dad: Are you insane?

Mom: That's ridiculous!

Dad: Where will you live?

Mom: how will you eat?

Dad: or pay for rent?

Mom: You'll go bankrupt!

Dad: You'll get kicked to the streets!

Mom: And for what? Some stupid band-

Asher: It's not just a "stupid band!" Our music is going to change lives.

Dad: sure, sure, but it won't make a paycheck.

Mom: Asher, this dream of yours is no way to live. You need to go to college and get a real job

Asher: Wrong, it's no traditional way to live. But I don't want to be traditional. I don't want to do what everyone else is doing.

Mom: Have you ever stopped to think that the reason most people go to college is because getting an education is the right thing to do?

Asher: I'm not saying education is bad-

Dad: That's exactly what it sounds like you're saying. Why else wouldn't you go get an education?

Asher: Because following my dream is more important than going to college.

Mom: Nothing is more important than going to college after high school! Especially something as silly as pursuing music.

Asher: This isn't some silly joke!! Sam and I are going to make a difference on this planet and not be stuck in some job I hate until I die. I can't live my life like that! I can't live my life knowing there are more people like me out there who need my help, people who are bullied and shunned just for being who they are and loving who they love and who could be inspired to be themselves through our music!

Asher realizes what he's implied after he finishes speaking. Everyone goes silent. Dad is in denial, Mom is slowly starting to get it.

Dad: What do you mean people like you have been bullied for who they love? You've never had a girlfriend as far as we know.

Mom: ... Asher... Please.

Asher: Well, I'm already a disappointment, might as well go the extra mile to Disowned Town.

Dad is slowly starting to get it

Asher: I'm bisexual. I like boys and gi-

Dad: You will pack your things and leave

Mom: Thomas!

Dad: If you want to be a homeless fag on the streets of LA, then it's your life. But do not expect any help from here.

Mom: Thomas!!

Asher: No mom, it's fine. It's fine. I'd rather be loved for who I am and be out on the streets than stay another second under this roof.

Asher leaves the room, leaving the mom and dad alone. The mom starts sobbing, the dad stays stone cold faced.

Asher's Mom: Thomas... why? Couldn't we have talked about it-

Asher's Dad: absolutely not. There's nothing to talk about Dollie.
