Wednesday/September 9, 1992/Los Angeles, CA
Live at the Pauley Pavilion, the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. Raven sat in the audience with some of her closest friends, fellow choreographers Fatima Robinson and Tina Landon. Raven loved getting together with her girls, especially at like events but she was missing her boys like crazy. Seeing them would be the greatest exhale of relief after all the Brooklyn drama.
"And the award for Best Dance Video goes to..." Vanessa Williams tore open the envelope in hand. "Prince and the New Power Generation! Cream!"
Raven hopped up from her chair like they called her name, laughing with her friends before making her way to the stage. Showing up tonight didn't feel like such a waste anymore.
Raven strutted down the aisle adorned in Versace. Black leather boots and pants, swirls of gold on the left leg, and a matching vest over the printed white and gold jacket.
"Heyyy!" she beamed in front of the microphone, showing off her borrowed Moonman. "Quick disclaimer, though I wish I could say I did, I did not choreograph this music video. Shout out to Sean Cheesman who did. And on behalf of Prince and the New Power Generation, thank you to the fans, MTV, my dear friend Rebecca Blake who directed the video and all the sexy dancers who were part of it. And why am I up here accepting this, you ask?" She picked up the Moonman, the crowd cheering in assumption. "I don't know, ask Tina Landon. Peace and love." She kissed her fingers and tossed her love to the watching world.
Not long after, Eddie Murphy was presenting for Best Choreography in a Video. "And the winner is—En Vogue, My Lovin'. Choreographed by Travis Payne, LaVelle Smith Jr, and Raven Rosario." Still undefeated. Three years in a row she had the pleasure of accepting the award, fourth time overall.
She was the last to make it to the stage, coming from the back. "Come on now," Eddie said, waving her over. "Lookin' like a Versace cowgirl."
"Oh, hush."
"See honestly, we didn't even need her," LaVelle teased the audience, "we just wanted to win and she was our good luck charm."
Raven rolled her eyes and hugged him, taking her turn with the award at the mic stand. "I definitely played my part so I'd like to thank En Vogue for bringing me on, LaVelle and Travis for putting up with me, and a big I love you to my babies at home and, um-"
"Cream," Eddie sang behind her, "get on top. Cream, don't you stop."
Thrown off, Raven moved aside laughing and invited Travis to the podium. "You're such an ass," she mouthed to the jokester.
Backstage, Eddie was asking her to come out and party after the show. Raven gave him the same excuse she'd been giving her girls all night. "I have to get back home to my boys."
