Past.

The past needs to be understood before we can continue with the present.

"I am no ordinary human."

"I knew you weren't normally the first I saw you." They mumbled unfazed, pulling out another cancer stick before lighting it up. "Did you think I didn't see you disappearing in the shadows like some Pokémon?"

He wanted to stay serious, yet he couldn't hold himself back once he heard his best friend compare him to a Pokémon, "I'm not a Pokémon so that you know!"

A dry chuckle escaped their lips, as they sat down at a nearby bench. Their companion joined them, hiding his hands in his hoodie pocket from the piercing cold. They took a drag of the cigarette and stared off into the distance. "Are you some kind of ghost?"

"Nah, I'm not a ghost." He replied. "I'm just someone who purges evil spirits and along the way, I met a person which I now call my best friend."

"I feel honored." They chuckled. "Is it fun getting rid of evil spirits?"

He thought for a while, but then came to the ultimate conclusion that it was no longer fun. "It was fun at first but now it just turned boring and repetitive."

"And how long have you been doing this whole thing?" They asked, genuinely interested in his job.

"For about seven years, but I won't be doing it any longer." He admitted, as his gaze wandered to the big night sky. The moonshine illuminated the dark park, giving the two individuals some sense of comfort. Stars shined brightly above them, a few occasionally dying and losing their light altogether, never to be seen again.

Not giving a chance for another question to be asked again, he continued. "Star, I want to live a normal life again."

Both their eyes met.

"I'm assuming that you want me in this new normal life?" They asked softly, a smile itching its way toward their lips.

"Yes, I do. Of course, I do."

"Sounds good to me because you won't be able to get rid of me anytime soon."

"You do know that you're awfully calm for someone who just found out that their friend is someone who purges demons as their job." He laughed. "Aren't you scared?"

"Nothing scares me anymore, Moony."

"You're so edgy, Star."

The rest of the cold night was spent with laughter as the two friends enjoyed themselves.

A sight escaped their lips as they zipped the bag up.

The purple paint of the walls was chirped down. As they grew older so did their room. The bed squeaked under their weight as they sat down. Their eyes fell onto the old wooden bookshelf where previously countless books had resided. The top plank of the shelf was broken in two, laying against the foot of the shelf. Their father built them the bookshelf, and they smiled. They smiled at the memory of him building it, at the memory of how he used to be. A kind man, but kindness eventually dies down like everything in this cold cruel world.
