Rukma quietly finished the update at the faculty meeting about the conference. She was not in mood to discuss much so she ensured that the younger delegates provided most of the details. University chancellor appreciated the achievement of the team and said that he was proud to be a mentor of Rukma. She felt thankful for this second family that keeps her rooted despite all the storms in her life.
Aditi had refrained from talking anything personal with her till they were alone. She knew a lot had happened on this short trip and she wanted her friend to feel comfortable while sharing it all. They had planned a quiet lunch away at the den in her legal office. Aditi's husband Jai SIngh Rathore was a famous lawyer and their Rathore Associates was one of the best legal firms in the country. Jai was trained by Rukma's father and had offered to marry Rukma. While Jai considered it a practical marriage plan to thank his mentor and also find a bride appropriate for his regal family, Rukma was besotted with him.
Jai was tall, muscular and a thorough gentleman and soon dominated the dreams of a young Rukma and her friends including Aditi. The car accident that took her parents lives made Jai even more adamant on marrying her. However as they came close to actual marriage discussions, Rukma realised that she was walking into a gilded cage. She felt the social obligations and duties of the Rathore 'princess' would not allow her to support her younger brother the way she wanted. So she had to back out only a few weeks ahead of the actual date and it was she who suggested that Aditi and Jai be married. Her relationship with Aditi remained that of best of friends and Jai was now Aditi's husband only.
Aditi maintained a small chamber and living area in the office where they rested in case of late night work or needed to have a small conference with senior lawyers. There were sofas on the side and a desk at another end. Few weeks back this was where Rukma and Aditi had found the privacy for drafting her annulment papers. It had happened on a night more than a fortnight ago when Rukma had run into Vit and he had asked for the marriage closure.
Today was another milestone and Aditi could feel it in the way Rukma was jittery. They settled on the sofa with a cup of coffee and Aditi told the staff not to disturb them for anything.
'What is the news from Prague Rook?'
'Well, Jakes had moved on to offering Live-in and Vit is still a Frog'
'Wow, so you guys kissed again?'
'Kiss does not cover it Dits!'
'So Rook, how are you feeling?'
'Dits, I felt tempted to jump into the bed with Jakes!'
'What!! Rook are you in your senses?'
'Believe me, I felt it was a sensible option for full 30 seconds!!'
'Rook, I am not a conservative or against you having a relationship but I know that you would never be happy with a casual relation, let alone a one-night-stand.'
