"Good old Liverpool," Dan inhaled the familiar scent of his hometown as he opened the TARDIS doors. "See you tomorrow Doc!" she heard him shout as he left.
"Alright, just you and me now, eh?" the Doctor said to the TARDIS. She stood by the glowing console for a minute before deciding to head to the library to reread some of her favorite stories. She didn't visit there often, but it was still full of books that had been reread dozens of times throughout many regenerations.
As she headed to the library, she heard faint classical music playing down another hallway, the bedroom hall. Her forehead wrinkled in thought, she was sure that she was alone in the TARDIS. Dan must have left his music on again, she concluded, laughing that Dan listened to classical music of all things.
The Doctor retreated a few steps and turned down the bedroom hall, quickly realizing it wasn't Dan's room that the music was coming from. A few doors down, the music became louder as she reached Yaz's room. Concern flooded her mind, her face crinkling in worry that something had happened and Yaz wasn't okay. She knocked softly, attempting and failing to calm her thoughts as she waited for a response.
The music softened slightly, and Yaz opened the door to a very confused Doctor. "What's wrong?" Yaz asked, dressed in sweats, hair half done.
"Oh, nothing," the Doctor sighed in relief at the sight of Yaz's only slightly frustrated face. "I just thought you had left already, Dan had just gone off to lunch and I know you are going out with Sonya and -" the Doctor paused as she realized she was rambling. She struggled to find the right words, her eyes wandering down Yaz's frame. "Anyways, I'll let you finish getting ready," the Doctor said hurriedly, noticing the outfits strewn across Yaz's bed and the bobby pins ready to be placed in her hair.
Before she could leave, Yaz cut in, "Actually Doctor, I was hoping you could help me with something?" A smile formed on Yaz's face as she talked, she was excited by the fact that she had the Doctor to herself for a moment. She loved Dan of course, but the need for constant conversation that came with his presence could be overwhelming at times.
The Doctor nodded in response. "I'd love to." She would do anything for Yaz.
Yaz walked further into her room, and the Doctor hesitantly followed, not sure where she was meant to stand. Her heartbeats quickened slightly, annoying her. It's just Yaz, she thought, trying to steady herself. Being in Yaz's bedroom seemed intimate, she felt like she almost didn't deserve to be in there. The Doctor took a deep breath and began scanning the outfit options as Yaz turned back to face her. "Did you want help picking an outfit?" The Doctor asked, confused.
Yaz laughed, "No, I've got that part by myself. I was wondering if you knew how to braid?" Her face turned a slight shade of embarrassment as the Doctor broke into a smile.
"Actually, yes!" exclaimed the Doctor, glad to be useful in a more human sense than normal.
"Wait, really?" Yaz laughed.
"Of course, why wouldn't I?" she said, confused as to Yaz's disbelief.
"It's just, I wasn't expecting you to know, with the way you talk about being a man before."
"I really was a man, you know, you're gonna have to start believing me on that. I can braid though." promised the Doctor. "Here, come on," she motioned to the chair sitting next to the vanity.
Yaz hesitantly sat and gasped softly as the Doctor took the right side of her hair into her hands. She hoped the Doctor didn't notice her reaction. "Just like the other side?" the Doctor inquired.
"Yeah, I just can't get it to look the same," Yaz said, with a hint of frustration in her voice. That frustration quickly melted away when she felt the Doctor begin to braid, and butterflies formed in her stomach. She admired the Doctor, and the thought of her help in such a small task brought to surface feelings she had been keeping buried.
Yaz watched the Doctor's reflection in the tall mirror in front of them, smiling at the look of concentration showing on her face. The Doctor finished up quickly, tying the short braid into a bun, matching the other on top of Yaz's head. "There, finished!" she said, confidence filling her voice. She glanced down at Yaz, relieved to see a smile on her face.
"It's perfect," Yaz softly stated. "Thank you." She smiled wider as she quickly picked out the remainder of her outfit and stepped back into the closet to change. The Doctor headed back to the console room, hoping to catch Yaz on the way out before facing the emptiness of the TARDIS again.
A few minutes passed as the Doctor sat on the steps near the console before Yaz came hurrying down. "You're picking us up tomorrow?" Yaz questioned, wondering to herself if she could tolerate her family that long.
"Yes, yep, tomorrow at noon," the Doctor hurriedly replied, standing up. "Going to get some reading done in the meantime, so the TARDIS will be here if you need anything."
Yaz felt relief flood her body knowing the Doctor would still be around, and still be safe while they were gone. She tried her best to hide the emotion from reaching her face.
"See you then!" Yaz slipped on her leather jacket and headed towards the door. "And thank you again for your help," she smiled. Turning back toward the Doctor, Yaz hugged her quickly before she could change her mind.
"Miss you already!" the Doctor joked as the TARDIS doors closed.
A million thoughts ran through Yaz's head as she walked up the steps to her parent's apartment. She kicked herself as she replayed her hug with the Doctor in her head. Embarrassed and flustered by her lame attempt at flirting, she walked around the corner and took a deep breath before opening the door and entering the chaos of her family home.
