Assonance is the repetition of similar accented vowel sounds. Assonance takes place when two or more words close to one another repeat the same vowel sound but start with different consonant sounds. Assonance also creates an echoing effect. Dapat lang na tandaan na kapag assonance ang usapan, magkakapareho na patinig ang inuulit sa magkakasunod na mga salita sa loob ng isang linya.
Patinig o vowel letters ay a, e, i, o at u.
Halimbawa:
“He gives his harness bells a shake…” ~ Robert Frost, “Stopping by the woods…”
The same vowel sound of the short vowel (e) repeats itself in almost all the words excluding the definite article.
Here's another example:
"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" - Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Sa halimbawang ito naman, ang patinig na (o) ang inuulit sa magkakasunod na salita sa liniyang iyan ng piece ni Shakespeare.
Consonance refers to repetitive sounds produced by consonants within a sentence or phrase. This repetition often takes place in quick succession. Dito naman, dapat niyong tandaan na katinig ang inuulit sa magkakasunod na salita. This repetition often occurs at the end of words, but may also be found within words. When consonant sounds are repeated only at the beginning of words, that is called alliteration rather than consonance.
To avoid confusion, keep in mind that alliteration involves the first letter in multiple words while, consonance can appear anywhere in the word or words but typically in the end.
Halimbawa:
The Acrobats by Shel Silverstein
The "ng" sound and the "z" sound are repeated in Shel Silverstein's "The Acrobats."
"I'll swing by my ankles.
She'll cling to your knees.
As you hang by your nose,
From a high-up trapeze.
But just one thing, please,
As we float through the breeze,
Don't sneeze."Both these literary devices give tone and melody to a poem and occurs repeatedly within a line or phrase but the difference is that assonance focus on vowels and consonance on consonants.
Key words na kailangan niyong tandaan sa pag-distinguish ng dalawa:
Assonance : vowel
Consonance : consonantAnother is, tandaan niyo ang first letter ng dalawa, which is "A" for assonance at "C" for consonance. Matik na vowel ang assonance because it started with letter "A" and "A" is a vowel. Ganoon rin sa consonance, consider "C" as a consonant and consonance is for consonant.
