Kie was walking, trying to understand what she was feeling. She didn't even know why she kissed JJ, but all she could think about at that moment was why she couldn't keep kissing him. She always froze when it came to talking about her feelings for him. She could never honestly say what was on her mind about him, even if it was breaking both JJ's and her own hearts in return. And because she couldn't talk, because she was tired of not being able to talk, she kissed him. JJ's lips had long been like a forbidden desire. Kie had avoided it for too long, knowing what would happen to her if he kissed him. But now that JJ was leaving, what was the point? Kie was barely admitting to herself, but she had thought that if she kissed her, maybe JJ would stay. But he was gone. She couldn't blame him for that, he had to go, he had done what was right for him. But the right thing was tearing Kie's heart apart.
She kept walking, thinking that she had made a mistake, but secretly feeling no guilt. Knowing that she would still be clung to his lips if JJ would come running after her, and even underhandedly hoping that JJ would actually come running.
She was just about to emerge from the bushes when a strong arm grabbed her and pulled her back. The hand hugged her from behind, gripping her body tightly. As Kie struggled in surprise and tried to see the face of the person holding her, she gasped with a cloth over her nose, then her eyes slowly closed down.
Meanwhile, JJ and Val had almost come out of the Outer Banks. For nearly twenty minutes, JJ didn't say a word, just staring out the window. Kie had kissed him, she had kissed him. It was unbelievable, it should have been unbelievable, but it didn't feel that way. On the contrary, kissing her felt so normal, so fundamental. He didn't even know how he had lived until this day without kissing her, it was as if their lips were made to be together. But it didn't mean anything, couldn't. Maybe if he wasn't leaving, Kie would accuse him of catching an emotional moment and kissing her. She wasn't ready to have feelings for JJ. JJ he knew somewhere inside, he knew they were meant to be each others, but they just couldn't get the time right. It wasn't anyone's fault, but obviously they both needed some time away from each other.
"I have a nice trip planned." ' Val said, bored with JJ's silence. "You get behind the wheel after breakfast."
"OK it's possible." said JJ.
"I'll sleep on the road if you sit there like a dead person, JJ." said Val. "What's wrong?"
"It's okay..." muttered JJ. "I'm excited, also a little sad."
"You look a little confused, too." ' Val said with a slight smile. "Kie fucked with your head right before leaving?"
"No, it's nothing like that."
"Keep your secrets, JJ. I'm not dying to hear you talk about Kie anyways."
"I'm not talking about Kie, you are!" shouted JJ.
"I'm shutting up..." Val whispered. "I stopped."
They went on in silence for a while. JJ couldn't think of anything but Kie. The fact that he went to his mother, that he would see his sister, seemed to have lost all importance. He was going on a 12 hours long trip for the possibility of having a relationship with people he didn't know, but Kie was just an hour away, back home. She was there, she had kissed him. He couldn't think of anything but that. He couldn't think of anything but Kie's breath caressing his skin, her fingers running through his hair. He felt like he couldn't breathe for a second.
"Stop the car." he said. Val turned to him, confused. But she continued driving. "Stop the car!" JJ repeated.
"What the hell, JJ! What?" she asked stopping the car. JJ opened up his door and took a deep breath.
