Wanda's mouth slipped open slightly, in line with her eyes that had widened at the sight before her.
Natasha Romanoff was on one knee, asking her to marry her. Her heart was screaming at her to say yes, and her brain was working on it, but in the meantime she just stood there and looked at her.
Natasha's confident smirk wavered slightly for a moment and she adjusted herself on her knee to keep balance. The ground below her was uneven and quite uncomfortable in this position. She didn't dare speak to encourage an answer in case Wanda gave one she didn't like.
The idea came from nowhere, not that she hadn't intended to propose to Wanda eventually, but it felt like the time to do it, and surely this could only prove that she wasn't going anywhere, right?
Wanda exhaled a long breath that neither woman had realised she was holding, and her gaze darted between the ring and Natasha, both bright against the surrounding darkness.
Natasha kept her focus only on Wanda's face, and more specifically her eyes. Wanda's eyes always gave her away, and to Natasha's relief they remained green, and didn't look like they were going dark. At least she wasn't angry, that was a good sign.
"You want me to marry you?"
Okay, not exactly what Natasha wanted to hear, but not exactly a no either.
"I do," Natasha said confidently, with a nod.
"After-," Wanda started but cut herself off and closed her mouth.
"Can I?" Natasha gestured to indicate that she wanted to stand, and Wanda slowly nodded. She looked dazed.
"I know that the past few months have been a lot, but I got this ring before all of that Wanda, and through everything my feelings for you haven't changed. I still want to be with you, and I want to learn from our mistakes and continue to work at this."
Wanda cocked her head slightly.
"I mean, I know what we have is worth the bad times, and I can't promise it'll be perfect but I can promise that I will love you every day, even when you hate me," Natasha continued, forcing a small laugh at the end.
"I didn't hate you," Wanda corrected.
"I'm pretty sure you did for a hot sec there," Natasha smiled, "I get it though."
"I hated what you did."
"I know."
"Natasha, I mean what I said, you can't do that again."
"I know," the Russian repeated.
"Yes."
"Yes?" Natasha needed her to confirm what she was saying, this was not a moment she wanted to pick up wrong.
"Yes, I will marry you-"
"Wanda-" Natasha's face exploded with a real smile, warm and practically lighting up the area around them.
"Not right away," Wanda finished.
"Oh," Natasha furrowed her brow. Was this a yes, or a no?
"I mean, I do want to marry you, and I love you," she reached a hand out and placed it on top of Natasha's which was still holding the ring box. Though neither spoke it aloud, they both felt a shock run through them at the contact, having missed it for so long.
"I just, we have a lot to work on, and we've both changed. I want you, and I will always want you Natasha, but we need some time."
Wanda cursed herself internally for having this sense, why didn't she just say yes?
