The mood in the room was grim, the promise of the war to come hanging over their heads like a dark cloud. King Erik's words also seemed to be echoing in all their minds, his horrid statements a great shock to them all.
"Well, it seems we will soon have a war on our hands despite our efforts to avoid it. I should go prepare." The Resvyan King said, heading out the door towards his office.
"This is all my fault..." Trixie whispered, the words of her father repeating over and over again in her head.
"No it is not. It will be alright, Trixie, I promise." Katya said.
"Yekaterina darling, why not let me talk to Beatrice for a moment? You go help your father instead." The Queen said in a soft tone, but her eyes were showing clearly that the girl had no choice.
"Alright, I shall be back in not too long." The Resvyan Princess promised, kissing her wife's forehead before heading off towards her father's office.
"Come sit, Beatrice." The Queen said as she moved from her wooden chair by the large table to a soft couch in the corner of the room. The young Princess followed the instruction, wiping some of her tears away with the back of her hand as she sat down next to the older woman.
"His words hurt you a lot, did they not?" The Queen asked.
"Y-yes.."
"I understand. What he is said was awful, but you must know it is so far from the truth. You may not have known your mother, but I did. Queen Agnes was kind, loving, graceful, and beautiful, and her biggest joy was carrying you in her womb. Your father wanted the doctors to focus on saving your mother, but she wanted them to do everything they could to save you. You meant everything to her, truly."
"B-but I killed her... If I had not been born she would still be alive." Trixie said through her tears.
"Oh my darling girl, you did not kill her. None of it can be blamed on you, and she would not want you to live your life feeling guilty for such a thing. She would have wanted you to live your life to the fullest, loving whoever you wished to love." The Queen assured the Princess.
"Are you certain? Even a woman?"
"Yes, even a woman. Queen Agnes did not believe in the antiquated laws of Midrosen, in fact she tried to have King Erik change them many times. She would never have approved of him trying to keep you and Yekaterina apart. Beatrice, you are everything she would have wished for you to be. Believe me, anyone would take great pride in calling you their daughter. I myself always took great pride in knowing you would one day be my daughter-in-law." The older woman said with the utmost sincerity.
"Thank you, I truly needed to hear that. After all, you are the closest thing to a mother I have ever had." Trixie said.
It was true. Even if Beatrice had only seen her in the short summers of her childhood, she was still the only woman who had treated her even remotely similar to a daughter. Of course, her governesses had all been kind, but not motherly. The Queen however had at times treated her more like a daughter than she had her own.
"Oh thank you, darling, but I think I should learn how to be more of a mother in general. I fear I have not been a very good one to Kathinka ever since her brother's passing."
"I think she would just like to be allowed to be herself, I am sure she knows you have also had a hard time, but she was just a child going through it all, you know?" Trixie said.
"I know... She should not have been forced to take on the role of her brother, it was not right of us to demand that. All those years we missed so much of her growing up by pressuring her to be someone else. She hardly ever confided in me, we hardly ever spent time together, I nearly let her slip through my fingers entirely... thinking of it now it makes me feel quite shameful. But I am glad it allowed her to still be around you, she is lucky to have you. I cannot imagine someone better to be the wife of my daughter." The Queen said.
"I am lucky to have her, the luckiest. And there is still time for you to grow close. I am sure she appreciated you speaking up against my father today as much as I did, so perhaps it can be a stepping stone in the right direction?"
"Do you really believe so?"
"Yes, I truly do. Katya loves you. Even if she has been hurt, she loves both you and her father very much, and I am certain she would love nothing more than to be able to just be your daughter again." Trixie replied.
"Then I shall do everything in my power to make her feel that way again."
