The return of the two princesses was met with celebrations all around the Kingdom, all of Resvya delighted and relieved to hear that their valiant princess had recovered from the mysterious disease which had stolen the lives of so many during the war. The next year was spent in joy and laughter, their fortunes seeming blessed and nothing seemingly being able to break their happiness. That was up until a messenger arrived from Midrosen.
"Your Royal Highness, I am afraid I come with news of sorrow." The messenger told Trixie after climbing off his horse.
"Colin, what has happened?" Trixie asked, feeling Katya take her hand seconds later, giving it a comforting squeeze.
Colin had been but a young boy working in the kitchens last time she was in Midrosen, but now that he was fully grown he seemed to have been granted much greater responsibility. He had grown tall and handsome, and Trixie was suddenly struck with longing as she thought of how long it had been since she had seen the rivers and plains of her homeland.
"The King has passed on to the Realm of the Heavens, he is with us no longer." Colin replied.
"Oh..."
Trixie did not quite know how to feel. The man had thrown her aside and said all kinds of cruelties, and yet for so many long years he had treated her with such kindness. For so long she had known him as a man of honor, and yet all the care he had for her had seemed to dissipate once she announced her love for a woman.
She at first thought she would be able to hate him easily, but she never could. He was the only close family she had ever known after all, her only parent, her only guardian. And yet here she was, learning of his death, and she could not make herself shed a tear.
She did feel some sadness, but not true sorrow.
Some relief, but not joy."I know it must come as a shock." Colin said.
"Ah yes, it is a shock indeed..." Trixie replied.
"Are you alright?" Katya whispered in her ear.
"Yes, I think so... that is what upsets me the most." Trixie whispered back before speaking to Colin again. "Is that all?"
"No, Your Royal Highness... The King initially removed you from his line after your marriage, but it seems he changed his decision before his passing."
"What does that mean exactly?" Trixie asked, feeling like a child in need of instructions.
"It means you are the rightful Queen of Midrosen, Your Majesty." Colin said.
"She is the Queen?" Katya questioned, not able to comprehend that the man had allowed his daughter to inherit the throne after all that had transpired.
"Yes, she is Queen Regnant of Midrosen, and by law you are also Queen Consort of Midrosen." He told Katya.
"Wait, how can that be? The Midrosen law strictly forbids our marriage." Katya replied.
"Most believe that he regretted pushing Her Majesty away, and that this was a last effort to reconcile. He asked for the documents on his death bed, they are all signed and binding. I have been requested to bring you both to Midrosen for the Coronation." Colin said.
Trixie turned to Katya, feeling a mix of sadness, joy and shock at the news. If only he had reached out sooner, she thought, then perhaps they could have found common ground again.
"He tried to reach out... He tried to make it right." Trixie said, tears now appearing in the corners of her eyes.
"He did, it is a grand gesture. He must have cared for you to do that, even it was late." Katya said before pulling her wife into a tight hug, keeping all other thoughts and judgments she had in regards to the man to herself.
Trixie collapsed into tears in Katya's arms, her sorrow suddenly washing over her like a tidal wave. The Resvyan drew comforting circles onto her back with one hand, the other being placed on the back of the girl's head, her fingers combing gently through Trixie's blonde curls.
"You will be alright, it will all be alright, dearest." Katya whispered.
They traveled to Midrosen the next morning, and for the first time Katya got to see the country she had heard so much about through the years. The next days were stressful, everything seeming to move too fast in Trixie's opinion. For the last couple of years she had been prepared to be Queen Consort, not a ruler herself, but now she would be the first of them to be a Queen in her own right. It was terrifying and overwhelming, but luckily Katya was there to remind her that they were in it together.
As Trixie stared up at the long pathway between herself and the altar she felt herself grow nervous once more. All eyes were on her and her unconventional lover as they made their way forward, and Trixie willed herself not to falter and crumble right there and then.
Katya looked towards her wife as they neared the front, marveling at her unprecedented beauty. She was dressed in a golden ballgown with a bodice embroidered with silver thread and pearls, her hair hanging down her back in soft ringlets. She looked as radiant as the sun, the very picture of perfection, as she knelt down before the steps to the altar.
Trixie felt a heavy weight on her shoulders as the golden crown was placed on her head. She suddenly found herself doubting if she was fit to be Queen.
Was she worthy of such a position? Could she could actually govern the people well and steer the Kingdom in the right direction? All this she wondered, but as she looked at Katya, who had just been granted her own crown, all such doubts disappeared.
For with Katya by her side, she could do anything.
As long as they were together, they could handle anything."Beatrice Elizabeth Agatha of House Zamolodchikov, born of House Mattel, will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the people of Midrosen with kindness and justice? Will you protect and uphold the Kingdom's traditions without forgetting to aid Midrosen as it moves forward to prosper in an ever-changing world?" A Midrosen official said as the scepter and orb were placed in Trixie's hands.
"I solemnly swear so to do." Trixie stated.
"Then rise, Queen Regnant Beatrice The Second, Sole Ruler of Midrosen." The man said. Trixie stood up slowly as instructed, turning towards the seated crowd before the scepter and orb were taken from her hands and placed in Katya's instead.
"Yekaterina Petrovna of House Zamolodchikov, will you solemnly promise and swear to aid the Queen in governing the people of Midrosen? Will you swear to stay loyal and true to Midrosen, it's people, and it's Queen?"
"I solemnly swear so to do." Katya replied.
"Then rise, Queen Consort Yekaterina The First."
Katya stood up just like Trixie had moments before, giving the scepter and orb away as they stared out at their people. Music started to play once more and the two walked out of the hall to a crowd of cheering people.
"Long live Queen Beatrice and Queen Katya!" They shouted as the pair waved, and Trixie felt a sigh of relief run through her as she heard that her people had no problem with the law change her father had made.
"Long live the Queen indeed." Katya said, taking Trixie's hand and kissing it sweetly.
Their journey had been long and filled with difficulties, but finally they stood there in front of their people.
The planned union of Resvya and Midrosen, the pact which had started it all, finally completed.
