KABANATA 17- Miranda Rights

I lay still on my bed, waiting for my alarm to ring. Nang makarating ako sa kuwarto ko ay hindi ko na magawang makatulog. Kaya hinihintay ko na lang ang makeup artist ko na dumating para maayusan na ako.

Meeting my friends does help ease my stress. I couldn’t even say that I was upset now because I only felt nothing. Last night I was crying, and now I feel empty. It felt like I have shed all the water in my body. Now I only have air in me.

Everything that happened last night became blurry. I couldn't recall it clearly, or maybe it was how my mind works; it tends to forget all the unnecessary things that it can't afford to handle.

My alarm rang, followed by a door click, but I didn't move. My eyes remain on the ceiling. I need to think of something. I need something that could motivate me to function…

“And that… ladies and gentlemen, is the alarm for the newest skincare in Europe! Presenting the Posse!!!” My body unconsciously flew to sit down on the bed and face Eddie.

“Did you just say, Posse?” tanong ko nang bahagyang nakaladlad ang bibig.

“Uhuh! They haven't released this essence yet, pero dahil I have connections. Nai-reserve kita agad!” I immediately bounced out of bed and sat in front of the vanity mirror.

My eyes were closed as Eddie was applying the essence to my face. Chanty, Eddie's Assistant, was playing a piece of classical music on her phone, and I couldn't help but sway my hands as if I was a conductor of an orchestra.

The product feels light on my skin. It has a cooling, and soothing effect, which gives me the feel of a weight being removed from my shoulders.

“I knew this would cheer you up!” komento ni Eddie. Natigil ako sa pagkumpas kasabay nang paghinto ng pagpapatugtog ni Chanty. Dumilat ako at direktang tiningnan sa salamin si Eddie.

“Ah… eh… it—kasi… Chanty…?” alanganing paliwanag nito na hindi matuloy at sa huli ay nagtangka pang humingi ng tulong sa assistant niya.

“What Eddie?” I asked. Calmly staring at him in the mirror.

“Charm, dearest… it was just a slip of the tongue, ‘di ba Chanty?” Pinandilatan niya ang assisstant na nasa gilid lang ng vanity mirror at alanganing naka-ngiti.

“You know, dear. I also have the latest—”

“Where did you hear it?” tanong ko sa akma niyang pagbabago ng topic.

“I-i didn't mean to, Charm. It was just that… I walked past a couple of maids… at pinag-uusapan nila na you had a huge fight with your Mom? But as for the other details… I don't know!” Itinaas niya ang dalawang kamay niya sa ere na para bang sumusuko. I clenched my fist as I calm my already racing heart. “Really! Hindi ko na inalam pa. I thought—”

“Just do what you're good at,” malamig na sabi ko sa kanya. Napakamot siya sa likod ng ulo niya. “Quickly,” dagdag ko pa. Nagpatuloy na siya sa paglalagay ng makeup sa akin.

Those maids are fearless, freely walking around and gossiping about their employers. They can't spare me a bit of respect, can't they?

Nang matapos na si Eddie ay nagsuot na ako ng uniform ko. Mabibigat ang bawat paghakbang na ginagawa ko habang palabas ng mansion. Mainit pa rin ang ulo ko.

Huminto ako nang makasalubong pababa ng hagdan ang dalawang maid na may hawak na duster. I glared at them kaya tumigil sila at napayuko.

“Clean the moss in the central fountain. Kayo mismo ang gagawa,”I commanded and didn't give them time to refuse. I continued to climb down the grand staircase, and as soon as I hopped inside the car, is just when I felt that I could finally breathe.
