Dimentio lunged forward with the tip of his weapon pointed at Blumiere's chest. Blumiere quickly blocked with his own weapon, countering his attack with a jab. Dimentio spun around and knocked his opponent's means of defense to the ground, once again pointing the pointed edge to Blumiere's chest. The two of them stood, breathing heavily as Blumiere and Dimentio remained frozen in place.
"Well done, Dimentio," Blumiere started, "your fencing lessons from me are actually showing in your new fighting prowess. What has it been now, fifteen defeats in a row on my end?"
Blumiere chuckled and Dimentio smiled in response.
"Well, it goes to show how well you taught me," Dimentio replied.
The weapons they had been using were remnants from Blumiere's staff, two long sticks that had been pried off the already decaying wood. Dimentio stooped down and picked up Blumiere's dropped fencing stick and placed both his and that one off to the side.
"I feel like that's enough practice on that, shall we get on with digging?" Dimentio asked, brushing some dust off his worn tank top.
Blumiere hummed in response, not giving him his full attention as he stared off in another direction. Dimentio tilted his head in confusion, arching a masked eyebrow at him.
"Er, Blumiere, are you alright?" Dimentio asked.
"Huh?" Blumiere asked, turning back around to look at him, "S-sorry, Dimentio. Just got lost in my thoughts."
Dimentio glanced down at Blumiere's hands to see the newspaper he had requested so many years ago. Most of it was ripped apart and destroyed, but Blumiere had taken and treasured the picture of his family from the article. He treated that photo from the paper like it was the most valuable object he had ever owned. Dimentio had never even seen him half as possessing over the Dark Prognosticus or the Chaos Heart when he had those.
"Like a teenager gritting through their teeth, I can tell when someone is so blatantly lying." Dimentio smiled, "Do not worry, as I told you before, they will be more than overjoyed to see you again."
Blumiere chuckled and shook his head, tucking away the photo.
"It's not that which concerns me... It's the fact that... I've already missed so much of my children's lives..." Blumiere trailed off, "Edalius should be almost seventeen by now! And my daughter - my daughter whom I never got to learn her name - will be fifteen! I have never even set my eyes on her before! Will she even recognize me as her father?"
Dimentio chuckled a little in response.
"Trust me, the two of you look very similar, even when she was an infant." Dimentio laughed, remembering how the little girl lacked in arms and legs similar to her father, "Let us just focus on the now. We're almost out, my fifteenth year now! This tunnel is only meters away from reaching the surface!"
Blumiere smiled and nodded his head with confidence returning. He pulled out his make-shift tools from his cloak, walking to the hole in the cell floor.
"Let's get out of here before we're late for supper, huh?" Blumiere asked.
------------
Dimentio and Blumiere both lay on the uneven rocky ground on their stomachs, their faces forward towards where they were digging. Blumiere took the front, chiseling away at the dark and unnaturally colored rock and dirt ahead. They were now far enough from the cells that it was now total pitch blackness, making it hard for even them to see after being in dark prison cells for so many years.
"Dimentio, could you give a little light, please?" Blumiere requested.
Dimentio nodded in response and held up his hand. He snapped his fingers together and little sparks came out as if he was trying to use a lighter. After a few unsuccessful tries, Dimentio finally lit a tiny flame on the tip of his pointer finger, just enough to light the path ahead.
