"You should've told me." Y/N whispers, voice faltering as their chin begins to wobble.
Every fibre of their being bands together to stop the sobs from taking over. Still their body trembles, as though a chill embraced the cabin despite the warmth from the crackling fire closeby.
"I-" Y/N swallows the lump in their throat, "-I don't know what to say."
Wanda remains unmoving before them. Her eyes gloss over as tears pool dangerously high. Her mouth opens and closes many times as she tries to articulate her pain into words. In the end all she can manage is a faint, "I'm sorry."
The weight of those two small words formed together opens the flood gates for Wanda. Her pain literally falls upon Y/N as tears collide on their hand that rests atop of Wanda's knee. Y/N nearly flinched as Wanda's overwhelming sorrow seeps in through their skin.
"Why are you sorry?" Y/N asks, lifting their free hand to shakily cup Wanda's cheek. Her lean into their touch soothes Y/N's woes temporarily. "How did it get this way?"
Wanda shakes her head slightly. "I don't know." She whimpers before pulling away.
"It's so strong, the pain." Wanda begins fiddling with her hands as she deliberately avoids Y/N's gaze. "It feels like my heart is broken down to my core. It's not what I wanted-" a hiccup captures her voice. Once recollecting herself Wanda concludes with, "I don't know what I want anymore."
"I'm not going to leave you, okay? It's you and me, it'll always be you and me." Y/N tries to reassure her. "I just wish you didn't hide. I could've been here for you."
"I'm afraid that bandaids are no good for this kind of ache, love." Wanda chuckles in spite of herself.
"What do you mean?"
"How can I come back from this? From what I've done? You didn't see them, Y/N." Wanda clenches her fists tight enough to leave indents from her nails. "I caused that pain. They were terrified."
"You didn't know you were harming them, though. And when you found out you saved those people!" Y/N reminds the Witch to no avail.
"I let my pain take over. I allowed that. I'm not sure I can come back from that. Nothing can heal if the same injury is inflicted again and again. What if my heart is a lost cause?"
"Wanda I-"
"No, Y/N!" Wanda shouts, causing Y/N to flinch. A twinge of guilt causes the Witch's stomach to drop. "I hid for a reason. I don't want you here." She continues, pushing aside her true feelings. "Strange never should have brought you."
Y/N stares in disbelief. Spits and spats from the fire fill the room as both parties grow silent. Tears fall freely down Y/N's cheeks while Wanda desperately forces hers back in.
Wanda's certain victory is coming her way when Y/N begins to rise from their seated position on the floor. She keeps her gaze glued to her hands - not trusting herself to stay strong under Y/N's pleading eyes.
"You're lying now, Wanda?" Y/N asks, prompting Wanda to snap up to them. "You've never lied to me before. Please, don't start now."
"Y/N...please." Wanda's tired eyes peer up at them. So vulnerable. No armour in sight.
"I'm not leaving. Not until you're honest with me." Y/N motions to Wanda's hand, asking for consent to take it before pulling her up off the floor. "I care too much about you to just walk away."
"I'm afraid." Wanda whispers, her hand sweaty in Y/N's.
"I know. I am too."
Y/N heads toward the sofa where they sit more comfortably. Wanda, having no real option but to face things head on, opts for delaying it a little longer by making some tea.
Y/N rolls their eyes, knowing fine rightly what the woman's doing. They let it go however, instead using this opportunity to dry their eyes. "I have to say, the cabin is beautiful."
"Mmhmm." Wanda hums, croakiness still evident in her voice. "It's peaceful. Quiet. I needed this."
Wanda approaches with two tea cups in hand. Placing one down in front of Y/N, she holds the second one close to her chest. The heat that's rising stings her chin but she doesn't mind the sensation.
"Wanda," Y/N waits until Wanda's eyes meet theirs before continuing, "Why did you leave? After Tony's funeral, I waited for you but you never came. No one knew where you went, Strange only found you after Westview."
"Strange could've found me at anytime, if he really wanted to." Wanda scoffs.
"What? Really? But when I- wait, don't turn my attention onto him, Maximoff." Y/N rubs their forehead in frustration. "You left, without a word for a week."
"I needed some time to myself." Wanda keeps her tone nonchalant, biting back her emotions.
"You could've told me that instead of leaving with no contact! I thought you-" Y/N chokes up, fresh tears pooling. After clearing their throat they try again, "I thought you left me forever."
Wanda winces upon hearing the despair in Y/N's voice. She has to shut her eyes to stop the overwhelming guilt from growing stronger. "I...I don't know what to tell you, Y/N."
"The truth."
"I told you-"
"Bullshit!" Y/N snaps, causing Wanda's tea to nearly scold her face. "Wanda please."
"Fine!" Wanda slams her mug onto the coffee table. "I was afraid of losing anything else that I love, okay?! I know I wouldn't survive that burning pain again. Hell, I barely did this time! After losing my parents, Pietro, Vision and Natasha, I couldn't sit and watch another loss."
"So, what, you decided leaving me yourself was the best option?" Y/N huffs out, sorrow and rage battling within them. "How could you do it?"
"I wasn't going to stick around and watch you disappear, not again." Wanda looks away. "I convinced myself you were already dead. You died with Vision."
"So you just pretended I was dead this whole time? You didn't even care how I was? Where I was?"
"Of course I did, Y/N!"
"Sure have a funny way of showing it."
"I thought leaving would be easier than having you and watching you get ripped away from me later." Wanda exclaims, her hands twitching as her powers beg to be used.
"Was it?" Y/N questions with shaky breath.
Wanda doesn't reply. Instead she turns away, balling her hands into fists. After a tense five seconds she shakes her head. "No...I needed you, I wanted to come find you but..."
"But what?" Y/N asks after Wanda fails to finish.
"I didn't think you'd want to see me. Especially if you'd heard about Westview." Wanda says as she turns to look back at Y/N with a sad smile.
"Well you thought wrong. That seems to be a theme for you at the minute." Y/N chuckles despite themselves, earning a more genuine smile from Wanda.
"I'm sorry, Y/N." Her lip quivers ever so slightly. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness but, I am truly sorry."
"Thank you." Y/N wipes the stray tear that escaped Wanda's eye. "I do forgive you...I wish you hadn't done it, but I understand your reasoning."
"I-" Wanda can't finish her sentence before her pent up emotions burst out once more.
"It's okay." Y/N hums, taking the woman in their arms. They run their finger in soothing circles on her back. "Next time, tell me when your world is falling down."
"I will." Wanda mumbles against their chest. "I promise."
