Summary - In the early hours of the morning, Wednesday stirs from deep slumber to the sound of whimpering and muffled screams.

-

The air is warm, contrary to the chill outside, leaving the huge accent window misted. The dormitories' heating had been upgraded during the refurbishing post-Crackstone battle, pleasing the majority. Wednesday was not part of that group. She much preferred the faint sting of her body freezing as she shivered herself to sleep.

Surprisingly, Enid wasn't a fan of the heat either. At least that's what Wednesday assumes is the case. Enid has been growling in her sleep more as of late, wakening her more often than not. Tonight, however, is different. It's not the sound of guttural growls, but of puppy-ish whimpering that stirs Wednesday from her slumber.

Slowly she sits up, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness before glancing to the disgustingly colourful side of the room. Enid's duvet is discarded on the floor with multiple stuffed animals dragged down with it. Strange, normally Enid would have retrieved her fallen friends the second they disappear, even whilst sleeping.

Wednesday looks up from the floor and back to the bed, finding Enid restlessly tossing and turning. Her whimpering has grown more prevalent, with the odd high pitched whine escaping her lips. Wednesday turns so her legs dangle off her bed. She doesn't particularly want to approach Enid's side of the room, so she attempts to waken her where she is.
"Enid."

No response.

"Enid, wake up." She tries again to no avail. Begrudgingly Wednesday rises and crosses the invisible divide between the room. Before she can call out again, Enid abruptly thrusts herself around, hands pawing at her ears in desperation. Her multicoloured claws are out in full force, threatening to pierce delicate skin.

"No, no, no!" She whines, tears free falling down her cheeks. Wednesday steps back, not expecting the pain in Enid's expression.

"Enid, please awaken. You are dreaming." Wednesday says, growing a bit irritated as time goes on. Instead of blue eyes opening to shine up at her, Wednesday is instead greeting by Enid screaming.

"Wednesday! Wednesday!" Enid is like a broken record, stuck between yelling her name and screaming bloody murder. At this point Wednesday is covering her ears and frantically looking for Thing.

"Thing?" As if on cue, the scarred appendage leaps onto her shoulder, ready for duty so to speak. "I need a damp cloth." Thing raises a finger in question but is cut off by a demanding 'now' from Wednesday.

Wednesday steels herself, inhaling deeply. She reluctantly sits beside the squirming blonde on her bed and attempts to stop her hands from scratching at her skin. Thing returns hastily with Wednesday's grey face cloth sufficiently dampened. She thanks him with a nod before finding Enid's forehead underneath a layer of sweat slicked hair. Enid's moving so erratically that Wednesday has to cradle her cheek in one hand to keep her head still before placing the damp cloth atop her.

Thing starts tapping with concern, having travelled to Enid's beside table.

"I believe she's having a night-terror." Wednesday answers his queries. "I have read about them. It is hard to waken someone plagued by them."

Enid's screams have stopped, but she's still deeply asleep. Wednesday's hand is damp from the tears rolling down Enid's cheek and onto it, but she doesn't care, not right now, not with more important things to be worried about.

Enid's hands find Wednesday's, claws digging in. Wednesday suppresses the pain with ease, redirecting her hands to the duvet instead. She can always buy Enid a new cover in the morning. Dabbing the face cloth gently against the sleeping blonde, Wednesday finds her beginning to stir.

"No, stop! No!" Enid yelps, bolting up out of bed and nearly colliding with Wednesday in the process. "Wha-what?"

"Enid." Wednesday greets, nudging her lightly back against the headboard. "Do not panic, you are safe in our dorm. You were merely having a nightmare."

"A-huh?" Enid's eyes finally decide to focus, showing Wednesday right beside her and Thing close by, too. Her breathing is sporadic. "Wednesday?"

"Are you alright?" Wednesday asks.

"Yeah, sorry I just," she falters, head falling onto her palms. "I thought I beat those."

Wednesday's head tilts, partly to recapture Enid's eyes and partly from curiosity. "Beat them? Are you referring to the-"

"Yeah, the stupid night-terrors."

"Please elaborate."

Enid sighs, sitting up more comfortably before returning to Wednesday's heavy gaze. "I used to get them constantly as a kid, but they stopped when I started at Nevermore. I thought I had gotten past it." She growls inwardly. "Guess not."

"You sound ashamed but, I can not fathom why?" Wednesday begins. "We have no control over our dreams, unless you've mastered the art of lucid dreaming of course. It is only reasonable that after such...traumatic events that we endured only months ago that you'd be haunted at night."

"Really? You don't think it-" Enid chokes on her words, tears threatening to start anew. "It doesn't mean I'm weak?"

Wednesday looks incredulously down at her. "You are the farthest thing from weak, Enid. You transformed for the first time and fought a Hyde far more experienced in battle than you, and won. While under a blood moon, might I add? All to spare my woeful life. If that isn't enough to convince you, you've also stood up to not only Bianca, but me as well. I assure you, not even Pugsley dares test me too much." Enid chuckles at that, noticing the smallest hint of a smile on Wednesday. "Furthermore, I would never associate with someone I deemed weak...nor would I love someone as much I do you."

Wednesday stiffens, shocking herself alongside Enid. Thing stealthily takes his leave, not before gesturing teasingly toward the seer.

"Thanks Wednesday." Enid breaks the tense silence. "You've gotten a lot better at the whole comforting thing, y'know."

"I've had a lot of practice." She responds, not daring to look away. Enid's tears have dried up and the terrified expression from before has been replaced with a hopeful grin.

"Wends, did you mean that last part how I think you did?" Enid asks.

"That depends on what you think."

"Well...no, nevermind." Enid stutters. "I don't think I'm strong enough to hear the answer right now." Wednesday's brow quirks upward as she eyes the blonde's wavering false smile.

"Enid, I once told you that you left an indelible mark on me. I have since found that to be an understatement. You wormed your way into my heart so carefully slow I had no chance to stop you." Wednesday waits for Enid to look at her before continuing. "You mean a great deal to me. I want you in my life indefinitely, if you want that too. As a friend, partner in crime solving...or more. I will be happy with anything you want, as long as you're happy."

"You really mean it?"

"You know I don't waste air on pity lies." Enid abruptly captures Wednesday in a tight, warm embrace.

"You're amazing, Wends." Enid declares, a genuine grin hurting her cheeks. "I love you, too."

"Hmm, that is annoyingly nice to hear." Wednesday returns her embrace, nuzzling her head into the crook of Enid's neck. "I suppose this begins our courtship."

"You sound so old." Enid chuckles, pulling back to look into dark brown eyes. "Are you sure about this?"

"Unequivocally, cara mia."
