Breather

The compound is still, almost like no person has ever set foot in it before. A chill travels up Y/N's spine as they walk on the tips of their toes toward the stairs. Stomach rumbling fiercely, they're in search for the kitchen.

A proper tour hasn't been given to them yet, so Y/N relies on their senses to lead them to the food. Luckily for them, the Avengers like to keep their food reserves stocked up high, so finding it's scent doesn't take long.

Turning the corner Y/N nearly collides with Wanda, having been too focused on finding sustenance to have heard her approaching. "Shoot sorry, Wanda!" They apologise, steading Wanda before she has the chance to fall backward.

This leaves the pair in close quarters and Y/N's eyes can't help but wander to Wanda's plump lips. It's only six am so Wanda, with her messy bed head and groggy eyes, doesn't catch the glance. Too sleepy to notice.

Instead she steps back, attempting to discreetly flatten her cows-lick in the process. "It's okay, don't worry. I wasn't paying attention to where I was going." She chuckles, and that's when Y/N notices the redness in her eyes.

"Are you okay? Have you been crying?" They ask, keeping their voice low. Wanda lightly swats away any stray tears left from her cheeks with haste.

"It's nothing, I was just thinking too much." Wanda forces an unconvincing smile, but Y/N refrains from prying any further. "Are you heading for breakfast? Would you, um...like company?"

Y/N's mouth morphs into an undeniable grin. They nod enthusiastically, already forgetting about the previous interaction. The opportunity of spending alone time with Wanda outside of a cage? Who could blame them for jumping topics.

"Natasha and Bucky are leaving in a couple hours to interrogate Zemo." Wanda states with a sly grin. "D'y'know what that means, Y/N?"

"Uhm...that...I got nothing." Y/N attempts to fill in Wanda's blank with no luck.

"It means you're off the clock today!" Wanda declares. "No memory searching or Nat glaring at you. You're free to do what you want today. Within the compound's grounds."

"Really? Oh wow, I honestly assumed I would just be barred to that room from last night the whole time."

"If you really thought that then why were you roaming the building just now?"

"I never said I would obey." Y/N shrugs, giggling softly a second after. "I'm kidding of course. I'm way too smart to piss off anyone here...well, piss them off more than I already have. I just really needed some food and I couldn't wait any longer." They explain. "I was hoping no one would be up yet."

"Whoops." Wanda grins, the face of innocence. "I would say I'm sorry I ruined your plan, but I'm not."

"Oh don't worry, I'm glad you ruined it." Y/N plays along coyly.

Wanda looks at them quizzically, clearly not expecting the witty, alluring response. Not that she's opposed to it, most definitely not. Seeing Y/N slowly but surely coming out of their shell with each new interaction fills her with joy and exhilaration. Especially over the fact she is the one breaking down those walls.

A little later in the day, after more people have roused from their beds, Y/N aimlessly shadows the Avengers with Owlbert clutched in their hands. Honestly, they're unsure what to do with themselves. Tony confirmed an hour ago that they're free to roam, essentially one of them for the time being, but they aren't sure to what extent that statement carries.
