Kel bolted through his house, ignoring his mom's exasperated warnings telling him to settle down to not wake his baby sister, who was currently asleep in his dad's arms in the living room. He ran straight to his room and threw open the door in a hurry, he had startled his older brother, Hero, who was writing something at his desk on the other side of the room. Kel dismissed his curiosity in regards to what it was his brother was writing, his childhood best friend, Sunny, was being discharged from the local hospital today after a serious fight he'd had with Basil, yet another childhood friend of theirs, and was going to move to the city, meaning that Kel wasn't going to be able to see him again.
'Wait, why am I rushing so much? What am I even doing in here again? Wasn't I looking for something?' Kel thought to himself, finding that his mind had wandered and completely forgotten about his current task.
'Shoot! That's right! I owe Sunny $20! That's what I'm looking for! Focus Kel, focus! Get lost in thought another time, Sunny's going to leave soon!' He mentally reprimanded himself. Ok, so the whole $20 thing was just an excuse to see his old buddy off before he left, so what? He did feel a bit bad that he felt the need to come up with an excuse to see Sunny before he left, but with the sudden newsflash that Mari, Sunny's late older sister -plus his own friend and the girl that his brother happened to have crushed on back when she was alive- hadn't actually committed suicide, and had been accidentally murdered by the childhood friend in question and then strung up by the two former best friends turned who the heck knows what after their fight as to avoid Sunny's inevitable punishment for the act, Kel didn't quite know how Hero would react to his little brother's ever forgiving nature. Worst case scenario, Hero would yell at Kel for forgiving his girlfrie- uh- his "best friend's" murderer and refuse to talk to him ever again.
'Dang, that's dark-' Kel thought to himself, shuddering at the thought. He kept rifling through piles of clothing and boxes scattered through his side of his and Hero's shared bedroom.
"C'mon!! I know I had it here somewhere!" Kel whisper-shouted to himself frustratedly, he tore apart another box, but, as expected, didn't find any sign of the owed money.
"Uh, Kel? What are you looking for? And what's got you in such a hurry? Did you forget something until the last minute again?" Hero questioned from the other side of the room.
Sometimes, Kel hated that Hero knew him so well.
"Yep. I owe someone a 20 and I gotta catch 'em before they leave-" Kel responded, shoving box after box out of the way looking for the desired item.
Hero decided not to say anything about the copious amounts of boxes and instead opted to ask another question. "So who exactly do you owe money to? And why?" He asked, watching the younger of the two stumble to his feet and dash over to his closet to continue the search, leaving the upturned boxes and piles of laundry scattered across the floor, a stark contrast to Hero's own immaculately clean and organized side of the room.
This made Kel pause for a moment.
"Uh- Who do I owe the money to?" Kel repeated, turning in Hero's general direction before averting his gaze elsewhere, seemingly growing a bit nervous as he rubbed the back of his neck, trying to think of an answer that hopefully wouldn't agitate the older of the two.
Hero frowned at his usually open and upbeat brother's sudden secretive nature and thought of who it would be exactly that would make him act like this, until his expression relaxed a touch in realization, then turned serious again as he spoke. "It's Sunny, isn't it? The one you owe money?" Hero asked, Kel flinched a touch at his brother's response. 'Dang Hero and his dumb ability to read me like that-' Kel thought, bracing himself for his brother's reaction as he answered.
