Ch. 30-
I freeze, but Skyler quickly acts as she hops off of her bed and stands up as the door opens wider.
Hailey bursts inside screaming, "I can't sleep!"
Skyler is back to normal and scolds her sister, "Alright there, you know you have to go to sleep," Hailey scrunches her nose resembling her sister so well.
Skyler shakes her head and escorts her out of the room taking Hailey to her own bedroom. I lay back into the bed thinking about what just happened. I feel like I misled her by getting so close into thinking I was about to kiss her, but instead moved away and rejected her. Could I have hurt Skyler by doing this? I decide to apologize for being such a coward, but when she returns back to the room, and we are alone again, I become speechless once more. I try to pretend that I'm cool with whatever happened, but talking to her about it would be awkward. Skyler sits at the edge of the desk as she looks at me. I open my mouth to speak, but she kindly interrupts.
"You don't have to explain," She says softly.
Am I that predictable..?
"Let's cook some spaghetti," She says and holds out her hand for me.
I grasp a hold of it and I slowly relax and become less nervous as her hand wraps around mine. We walk down the flight of stairs and enter the kitchen. We let go of each other's hand before her Mom sees us and Skyler heads to the refrigerator pulling out ingredients. The tense atmosphere has melted away and I walk to the cupboards pulling out a box of spaghetti. Skyler gives me orders and together we start to make dinner. I dice up tomatoes as Skyler puts spices on the meat. Amy joins and squishes the meat into large meatballs placing it into a pan. We make a lot of meatballs and pop them into the oven. On the stove I stir the red tomato sauce and Skyler stands besides me, delicately splashes a few spices here and there. I notice that she grabs hot peppers and I give her a look.
"I hope you don't mind spicey food..." She says and laughs as she tosses it inside.
A few minutes later the meat is ready and I pull the hot plate out and place it over an oven mitt so that it doesn't burn the wood underneath. We pick up each meatball putting it into a large bowl and pour the sauce over it. We then put the spaghetti into another bowl and head to the dining table with the dishes. We place them down and prepare the table as Amy heads upstairs to wake up Hailey.
I watch her as I watch her work. She glances up feeling me staring at her and we make eye contact. She smiles at me.
"Ednan," She says.
"Yeah," I reply alerted thinking she will mention anything about the almost-kiss-from-upstairs.
"Would you like to drink soda or juice?" She asks.
"Soda is fine," I say and laugh at where my thoughts wander.
Amy and Hailey come downstairs and we sit down together. Everyone has food on their plate and before I can put a forkful of food in my mouth my phone rings loudly. I look down and notice there is no caller ID. I excuse myself from the table and turn around walking to another room.
"Good evening, Sir. I have great news for you." The man begins.
We speak to another for a minute and I click my phone off as sheer joy rushes throughout me. I rush inside excited to break the good news for everyone right away, not wanting to waste anytime.
I clear my throat grabbing their attention, "Skyler has won the 10 thousand dollars!"
The first one to jump to her feet is Amy. She flies off her chair and screams as she runs to Hailey and hugs her. Streams of tears fall from her eyes. Amy stands with her hands at her mouth and trying her best to catch up with her flowing tears and trying to wipe off her runny mascara. Skyler laughs from the heart. She stands and walks towards me as she embraces me.
