Vote bc the backstory is deep as fuck
Tws (they are all touched on at some point some deeper than others):
-self harm
-eating disorders
-suicide attempts
-hospital wiresThis chapter is not a necessity, simply Dream reminiscing and giving you some insight as to why they are both nervous to visit the hospital so if these trigger you too much in any way then you don't need to read it :)
Driving to the hospital can only allow him time to remember, to recall all the memories that he's wanted to keep locked away in fear of reopening healed wounds. The roads in front of him ones he's seen in darker times, the route he's taking reminding him of the distress he felt.
Since what happened hospitals haven't been his strong point, been a thing of weakness to make him crumble. He doesn't want to break now, he can't break now, for Adelias sake. If he's going to do this for anyone it's going to be her, to get her whatever medicine she needs and an inhaler because that's what he signed up for when he became a parent, to protect her no matter what sacrifices he has to make.
In this case he must sacrifice not revisiting old memories, instead, dusting them off and putting them on display for both him and George to see. A flash of something appears in his eyes momentarily as he remembers the brunette who has been sat restlessly at home.
With sweaty palms he reaches for his phone, fumbling to call up the other person in his life who he would sacrifice anything for. The phone rings a few times before George picks up, his voice rushing out to fill the void of the car.
"Dream?!", he speaks with concern, "Is she okay? What's going on? Why did you call me?", too many questions for the blonde who is trying his hardest not to crumble.
"She's going to be okay", he takes a breath, "But we have to- the doctor said its- it'll be better if we take her to the hospital", he whispers out the final word.
A stuttered out "oh" is all that can be heard from the other end of the phone before the brunette follows up with an "okay I'll meet you there" and hangs up.
Sighing, Dream takes one of his hands off the wheel to rub his temple, breaths coming out short and sharp as the hospital comes into sight. It's a tall, white bricked, building with many windows and a large glass automatic door at the front for people to enter by.
Pulling into a parking spot and turning off the car Dream lets his head fall against the wheel, eyes slipping closed to allow himself a minute of preparation. In truth, he'll never be ready to face his past again, neither will George with his and he knows that, but it's worth it to watch their little girl grow up happy and healthy.
With his eyes closed and head dropped against the steering wheel he remembers.
Remembers the panicked phone call his sister had to make when she found him lying on the floor next to a shattered vase almost three years ago, pieces of broken glass scattered across the carpet. He remembers slipping into a void of unknowing after using one piece of the glass where his large scar sits upon his left wrist now before waking up almost a day later connected to a thousand wires.
The large argument he and George had about a week prior to the incident that triggered both events, both of them forgetting key aspects to each other's pasts and unknowingly causing them to drop back into darkness. He remembered waking up at the hospital with his sister by his side and her informing him that George was okay, it was the first thing he'd asked after having received a phone call from Sapnap telling him to come to the hospital prior to his attempt.
But the moments to follow after she had paused were what he would name some of the worst moments in his life. The way she'd paused and rubbed her hands together nervously before continuing to speak made him know that what was to follow wouldn't be good. The glint often in her eyes had dimmed and he'd remember the words she spoke forever, then being engraved into his mind like a gravestone.
"His heart rate wasn't quite right when he fainted, the paramedics, they got worried so they brought him here", she'd paused again after that, "The first thing he asked about when he woke up was you".
Those were the words that had cut like a knife, sawed him in half and made his heart break because he knew what was to come next.
"We had to tell him Dream, he deserved to know the truth", at that he remembered crying, letting tears slip from his eyes whilst his sister held him close. The man whom he loved who he had hurt a week prior, waking up from a prolonged fainting spell and being in hospital, finding out that the man he had left (Dream) at home, had tried to commit. It had hurt, more than the glass ever could, it still does.
It was in that moment that he'd had the realisation of never again, that never again would he hurt the brunette, and if that meant getting his mental health under wraps, no matter how hard it was going to be, then by god was he going to do it. Because I'm that moment he also realised how much he truly loved George, realised that they were soulmates and one couldn't exist without the other, as proven by both their actions prior.
So when the brunette had come to visit him, comforted him whilst Dream tried his hardest to comfort him back, they started over, held each other close and allowed themselves just to be. Because despite the circumstances and despite everything that had happened, they were both alive and with each other, and to them that was all that mattered.
But the memories still hurt and the glass still scarred, stitches never fully healed and the scales are still in the cupboard. Everything that hurt once before, can hurt again if he lets it, if he unlocks the door to the scales, unpicks the stitches, retraces the scar and dives into the memories.
Though there's a difference, they have Adelia now and she's one of the two lights in his world. If he can't watch her grow into a happy and healthy child, watch her experience her first day at middle school, wave her off as she goes to collage or cry whilst walking her down the isle, then that light won't glow.
And he needs that light as much as he needs the other, so with a deep breath and a swallow he opens the car door for the third time today. Warm Florida air floods the car and he lifts his head from the steering wheel.
So now, three years from the incident, he steps out the car onto the hospitals ground, looks it up and down and takes in a breath. He's established he's ready, that he can face what he fears, retrace the scar without repercussions.
But that isn't why his heart pounds and palms sweat when lifting Adelia out of the car. He fears for someone else. It may be fine for him to face his fears now that he's ready, but he's unsure as to whether George is, whether this may accidentally unlock the door to the scales.
All he can do is hope and be there for the brunette when he needs him, be a hand to hold as they walk this scary route into their past.
