It was an average day for Davey and Les. They went to work in the morning, and came back in the evening. Les skipped ahead of Davey as they neared the door of their apartment.
"I can't wait to show Dad my playing cards!" Les said happily. Race had given Les a deck of playing cards earlier that day. Les pushed open the door and they stepped inside to pure horror. Their father's hands were shaking as he held a letter, and worse, their mother was sitting at the table crying.
"Mom?" Les asked. He ran up and hugged her. Davey approached their father, a sinking feeling in his stomach. Mr. Jacobs opened his mouth to speak, but instead handed Davey the letter.
Mr Jacobs,
We have noticed that you have fallen three months behind in your rent. Unfortunately, this cannot continue. Workers will be sent to clear out anything left tomorrow morning at precisely 10 am. We expect you to be gone by then.
Charles Miller, Landlord.
Davey felt like the floor had vanished and he was falling. He looked at Mrs. Jacobs.
"What's happening?" Les asked.
"Les..." Davey choked on his words. He cleared his throat. "They're evicting us." Davey had never seen Les' face look so sad and scared. If he wasn't trying to stay calm for Les, he would've broken down. Les looked up at Davey and burst into tears.

No one slept well that night. The next morning, they were up before the sun packing up everything they could afford to bring with them, which wasn't much. They each had a small box to fill with belongings. Les brought his favorite toys, his deck of cards, and his plush bunny that he had slept with ever since he was a baby and Mrs. Jacobs made it for him. Davey brought as many books as he could, a drawing of himself, Jack, Katherine, and Crutchie that Les had made, and a first aid kit that Jack and Race had helped him put together. Before they left, Davey came to a decision.
"Mom? Dad?" he asked. "I... Les and I can stay at the Lodge with the newsies. If we have somewhere to live, you can get a smaller apartment." His parents opened their mouths to protest, but Davey didn't let them speak. "Please. You have to trust me on this one. We're better off at the Lodge then homeless." They couldn't say anything to that.
"If you're sure you'll be okay..." Mr. Jacobs said hesitantly. Davey nodded.
"We'll be fine. The newsies will welcome us." There was a long moment of silence as they took in everything they were about to lose. Their lives were never going to be the same.

The Lodge was silent. The moon was high in the sky and everyone was fast asleep. Everyone except Davey. He sat on his bed, not wanting to disturb Les, who was asleep next to him. He just couldn't sleep. His family was a mess, and they were now homeless. He had to stay strong for Les, but it was hard when there was no one to be strong for him. Suddenly, he heard a loud noise from the washroom. It sounded like someone had opened the window. Davey slid off the bed and hurried to the washroom. He arrived just in time to see someone fall into the room from the window. He grabbed the nearest candle and held it up. Standing in front of him was a very familiar girl with reddish hair. Her face was stained with tears, her skirt was ripped and muddy, and she was soaked from the rain outside. Davey's jaw dropped.
"Katherine?"
